More than 2,500 people have now backed calls for a new school crossing in Coalville. It follows the death of of a 15-year-old schoolgirl on Monday.
Sian Ellis was hit by a bus on Meadow Lane. A local parent set up the online petition calling for a controlled crossing to ensure safety.
Sara Stewart told the BBC: "It's an awful road in general for the children to cross.
"This could happen to my son, this could happen again to somebody else's and we don't want that."
She said what happened on Monday made it "hit home" how dangerous the road is and she set up the petition calling for change.
North West Leicestershire district councillor Michael Wyatt said change could happen quite soon.
He said: "I have spoken to the county highways and they've absolutely assured me there will be a full review of the current road calming measures which are there at the moment.
"I've always stated they are inadequate for the amount of children that actually travel up and down Meadow Lane.
"It beggars belief that something like this has to happen before somebody actually wakes up and does something."
