The crew claimed they were "hostages" and called for international help as they faced legal threats from Italy's far-right interior minister Matteo Salvini who said they were aiding illegal immigration.

  19. Amber Peat inquest: GP had raised concerns about teenpublished at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2019

    Giles Taylor
    BBC East Midlands Today reporter

An inquest into the death of a 13-year-old girl who was found hanged after going missing in Mansfield has heard from the multi-agency team that had been supporting her prior to her move from Tibshelf.

Amber Peat had been referred to the team by her GP, who raised concerns about the teenager after she had run away from home.

The coroner heard she was seeing a youth worker once a week but no proper assessment had been carried out into the family as a whole.

Her mother had a history of depression and her step-father also experienced mental health problems that were known to the team.

When concerns were eventually raised in April it was too late as the family was already planning to move to Nottinghamshire.

The manager of the multi-action team told the hearing the threshold "simply hadn't been met" for greater intervention and the files could not be handed over to their counterparts across the border without the family's permission due to data protection issues.

It was also revealed that Amber had once run away to her school at night following an argument.

When her parents were contacted in the morning, they told teachers they were worried about Amber but couldn't come to collect her as the family dog was in labour.
