The new governor at Nottingham Prison says it remains dangerous for staff and inmates - a year after being declared "fundamentally unsafe" by inspectors who demanded urgent improvements.
The facility is one of 10 jails that prisons minister Rory Stewart has staked his career on, pledging to quit unless violence comes down by this summer.
Phil Novis said: "Every day there's an assault on my colleagues and other prisoners - that is regretful, but it is getting safer.
"But it's coming from such a low threshold that it's going to take time to get to a place where I and everybody can feel safe wherever they go."
Rory Stewart said while most of the prisons on his list were making "significant progress", Nottingham Prison remained "a challenge".
