    Oadby Town football club have announced they will play their remaining games this season, after previously saying they had 24 hours to save the club.

    The club had said they would have to exit the United Counties League unless they could raise £10,000 by noon today, but the club have just stated they will be able to finish the season.

    A statue of a 53-stone man could be coming to Leicester city centre.

    Campaigners are hoping to get funding and approval for a statue of "Leicester's largest son" Daniel Lambert.

    Born in Leicester on 13 March 1770, Daniel ballooned to an enormous size and by the time he died at the age of 39 his waist was a massive 9ft 4in.

    His coffin was built on wheels and it took more than 20 men to lower it into his grave.

    Now sculptor Sean Hedges-Quinn has said he will take up the challenge of creating a statue of the man, which campaigners want to install by the end of 2020.

    Mr Hedges-Quinn, who made the city's Alice Hawkins sculpture last year, told Radio Leicester: "It will be a photo opportunity statue with him seated on a bench and people can come take selfies with him. Then news of this great man will spread."

    A police crackdown on organised crime on a Nottingham estate has proved so successful, officers are considering extending it to other areas of the city.

    Operation Reacher has targeted drugs gangs and wider criminal activity in the Bestwood area and over the past year, more than 200 people have been arrested.

    A big part of the campaign involved getting the community onside with officers going into schools and supermarkets to build up relationships.

    Plans for 175 homes on the site of a former prisoner of war camp, now an industrial estate, have been approved.

    The proposals, for the Firs Works site, would see Nether Heage, north of Belper, almost double in size with 27 flats and 148 houses built on the old World War Two prison site.

    It was narrowly approved at an Amber Valley Borough Council meeting on Monday.

    Residents in the village opposed the scheme, suggesting the increased traffic would be a danger to pedestrians.

    Vice chairman of the committee, Councillor Ron Ashton, said: "There is quite a lot that has been said about building on green belt sites, and this is a good chance to develop a brownfield site.

    A restaurant has been fined £6,000 after an inspection found its kitchen infested with rats.

    TR and Sons, which owns Taj Lounge on Radcliffe Road, West Bridgford, pleaded guilty to seven breaches of food safety laws at Nottingham Magistrates' Court today.

    Rushcliffe Borough Council prosecuted the restaurant's owners following the discovery during an inspection which saw them score a zero food hygiene rating.

    Since the initial inspection, the restaurant's rating improved to a three.

    In addition to the fine, the company was ordered to pay costs of £1,324.60 and a victim surcharge of £70.

    A taxi driver has been left partially blind and unable to work after being punched on Christmas Day morning.

    Sujan Pal, 39, refused to drive a man who approached him outside the Rose and Crown pub in Houghton on the Hill, Leicestershire, police said.

    In response the man punched him in the face, causing serious damage to his left eye socket. The dad, who has been a taxi driver for 12 years, has since had to leave his job because of the injury.

    Det Con Mike Archer, investigating, added: “This was a very nasty and unprovoked attack on a man who was out working during the busy Christmas period."

    He added they are aware of a number of witnesses who have been reluctant to come forwards, and they wanted to assure them their statements would be treated "with the strictest confidence".

    Firefighters have closed off a road in the centre of Leicester to deal with a loose flag pole.

    They sent an engine and an aerial ladder platform after being called to Addict Dance Academy in Church Gate at 14:23.

    They have set up a cordon to stop cars and pedestrians. Area Traffic Control is warning people to avoid the Clock Tower area and buses are affected.

    Visitors to Wollaton Hall should stay away from the trees in the high winds, the park wardens are warning.

    Cars are not being allowed in and parts of the Nottingham park are closed because of the weather. Newstead Abbey is also shut.

    A statement on their page read: "All visitors are asked to remain vigilant around the trees in the grounds and avoid walking near them where possible."

    A 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car in Mansfield yesterday.

    Police said the child, who was struck in Carter Lane at about 14:45, was still in hospital but did not give any update on his condition.

    Anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam footage is asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police.

    A 14-year-old had to be taken to hospital after she was attacked by someone wielding what is believed to be a pair of scissors.

    Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening after the attack at about 8.30 today in Strelley Road, Bilborough.

    A duck was shot with an air gun in Newark, leaving her unable to stand.

    The RSPCA were called to rescue her after a member of the public found Jemima, as she is now known, with a wound on her leg on Thursday last week.

    They believe she was a pet as she had her wings clipped and so "was literally a sitting duck" when she was attacked and couldn't escape. She is now recovering and the charity is investigating.

    Animal Collection Officer Sharon Knight said: “It is very distressing to think that people take pleasure in causing harm to defenseless birds.

    “These are deliberate acts of cruelty and I would appeal to people’s consciences not to commit these offences.”
