    An eight-year-old boy has been taken to hospital with a broken leg after being hit by a vehicle in Leicester.

    Police were called to New Parks Way at 12:10 today and the road was closed between Scudamore Road and Dominion Road while the emergency services were at the scene. Police did not confirm what kind of vehicle was involved.

    A man in his 40s suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a van in Loughborough this afternoon.

    The man, who was a pedestrian, was struck in Rutland Street at about 12:50 by a small white van, which did not stop.

    Police said he was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

    Rutland Street was closed at its junction with Moor Lane after the crash but has since reopened.

    Det Insp Pete Flynn appealed for anyone who saw the accident or the van before it happened to get in touch with them and help officers with their investigation.

    Police are looking to speak to these people after cash was stolen from a handbag in Chesterfield.

    The bag was taken from a bar in Holywell Street at around 02:45 on 11 April and returned to its owner, who later discovered cash was missing from her purse.

    Police believe the two people pictured may have information which could help their inquiries.

    The gas leak near the A61 slip road in Chesterfield has been located, fixed and the area declared safe, the fire service said.

    Sheepbridge Lane, Foxwood Road, Broombank Road and Broombank park were closed for several hours this afternoon while work was carried out to find the leak.

    Police said roads were now re-opening and traffic was slowly moving again.

    The RSPCA was called to rescue this hedgehog who got tangled in a goal net in Chetwynd Banks, Beeston this morning.

    In a statement, the RSPCA said: "Netting can be lethal to wildlife who get caught up in it whilst doing what they do, trundling around, grubbing for food.

    "The simple solution to this is when it's not in use, put netting away safe."

    The hedgehog has been taken to a sanctuary and is doing well, the charity added.

    Police are still at the scene of a gas leak near the A61 in Chesterfield.

    Motorists have been advised to avoid the area as people on social media have reported being stuck within the cordon for up to four hours.

    The Sheepbridge Industrial Estate is heavily affected with no access in or out of the estate and the force said there is no indication yet of when the road will re-open.

    A further two people have been arrested following gunshots in Meredith Court, Stapleford on Monday.

    Nottinghamshire Police said a man, aged 22, has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and a 46-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

    This follows the arrests of two men, aged 18 and 23, in Queen's Road, Beeston, yesterday morning.

    They were detained on suspicion of:

    • Possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence
    • Robbery
    • Possession with intent to supply a class A drug
    • Possession with intent to supply a class B drug
    • Possession of a class B drug
    • Intimidating a witness or juror

    The 18-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit due to drugs and possessing criminal property.

    All four remain in police custody.

    The Environment Agency is continuing to use booms in the River Derwent to catch any oils and chemicals in the water after an industrial fire in Enterprise Way, Derby, on Monday.

    Officer Paul Reeves told Radio Derby there had not been any impact on fish or wildlife but they will continue using the booms until they are certain there is no more material coming through .

    A police officer has been found guilty of assaulting a man by using a Taser on him during an arrest at Derby Railway Station.

    PC Andrew Spiby, 53, from British Transport Police (BTP) was convicted of common assault after a two-day trial at Birmingham Magistrates' Court.

    The BTP said the officer was called to a disturbance on a station platform on 28 May last year with another officer, who used incapacitant spray on the man twice before he was Tasered.

    The other officer - PC John Severns - was cleared of assault.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigated after the arrested man complained about the level of force used on him in front of his family.

    Deputy Chief Constable Adrian Hanstock from the BTP, said the officers had been responding to a "challenging situation" and added that the use of a Taser can "often be a difficult judgement" .

    PC Spiby, of Suffolk Avenue, Derby, will be sentenced in June.

    Four men have admitted robbing a Hinckley jewellers at gunpoint in January.

    The group appeared at Leicester Crown Court today and pleaded guilty to one count of robbery over the raid at Goldust Jewellers in Market Place.

    They are:

    • Aiden Rudock, 18, of Gloster Road, Lutterworth
    • Grant Samuel, 22, of Milverton Road, Coventry
    • Orrin Stevenson, 24, of no fixed address, who also pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation firearm.
    • Timothy Wardrop, 22, of no fixed address

    Leicestershire Police said the men went into the shop about 11:00 on 25 January armed with two machetes and what appeared to be a double-barreled shotgun, though the weapon was never recovered.

    They threatened two members of staff before taking up to £80,000 worth of jewellery, and drove off in a BMW X5.

    The force said witnesses noted the registration plate and a short time later a car matching that description crashed in Market Bosworth, with reports of four men running off. They were eventually arrested by armed police.

    Det Con Jack Thomas, said: "The four men thought they could try and make a quick financial gain and make off without being caught.

    “But, thanks to staff and members of the public who were nearby – as well as our armed officers – the men were arrested within an hour of committing their crime."

    They will be sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on 21 May.
