    The former cabinet minister Esther McVey announced last week she will put herself forward for the position when Theresa May stands down.

    The prime minister has promised to set a timetable for the election of her successor after the next Brexit vote in the first week of June.

    The RSPCA is investigating after a dying foal was dumped "like rubbish" near Chesterfield.

    The one-week-old was found collapsed in a stable yesterday on land off Staveley Road near to Tom Lane, in Duckmanton.

    The charity has said he was freezing cold and barely alive. A decision was made to put him down to end his suffering.

    It's thought a person climbed over a locked fence to dump the animal between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

    The driver of a BMW died after crashing in to a tree in Derbyshire early this morning.

    The man was pronounced dead at the scene in Derby Road, near Smisby, after the collision at about 6:10.

    Emergency services closed the road near the junction with Heath Lane until about 12:00 and police are now appealing for witnesses.

    A section of the High Peak Trail which was closed a month ago when a lorry hit a bridge is to reopen after a temporary structure is installed.

    Derbyshire County Council has announced it is installing a temporary steel bridge over the B5056 near Brassington.

    The bridge will be lifted in to place on Sunday while a permanent restoration of the listed bridge is planned.

    It is hoped the route will be open by the bank holiday weekend.

    Cyclists will be riding between the University of Derby and Matlock tomorrow to highlight the need for a cycle way.

    The Derwent Valley Trust has raised £1m of the £9m needed for a route between between Derby and Chatsworth.

    The chairman of the trust, Derek Latham, said: "We'll have to cycle up the A6 because we don't have the cycle way now. This will demonstrate the need for the cycle way."

    The club has published its retained list, with several first team regulars departing Meadow Lane as their contracts expire.

    A kitchen fitter from Nottingham has received the Queen's Volunteer Reserves Medal for exemplary meritorious service.

    Simon Coulson is part of the army's Mercian Regiment. He was among 13 reserves selected for the award in the New Year's Honours list.

    He went to Buckingham Palace with his partner and parents to collect the medal from Prince Charles

    He said: "Having managed to get my parents there to see this special day and to see their joy and pride was extra special to me.

    Erewash schools have been giving their ideas on what they would like from the UK's new high-speed railway line.

    Current plans for HS2 will see the line go through Long Eaton and Sandiacre. There will also be an East Midlands hub in nearby Toton.

    Pupils from those areas have suggested face scanners could be used instead of physical tickets. They also said they would like to see wildlife habitats incorporated into the building’s structure.

    The workshop was put on by HS2 Ltd who are responsible for delivering the new railway line.

    Kim Soucy, from HS2 Ltd, said the ideas were, "well-thought out, mature and realistic".

    Spinney Hills, Highfields and Belgrave areas have been highlighted as having the highest number of children in poverty in the city.

    An environmental campaigner with three children said she "might have been more careful" about how many babies she had if she had known how it might impact on climate change.

    Cee Martin, 70, was one of several members of Extinction Rebellion Leicestershire who met for a picnic outside County Hall in Glenfield on Wednesday to "celebrate" Leicestershire County Council declaring a climate emergency.

    County councillors unanimously backed a motion which also saw the authority make a pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030.

    Ms Martin said: "As much as I love all of my children, and of course wouldn't change the fact I had them, I might have thought differently about it if I had known the impact and what was to come. I might have been more careful and just had two.

    "The size of the population is a problem, people are having bigger families, people are living longer. People need to stop and consider the future of the planet before they make decisions."
