    A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of making or possessing explosives after three houses in a Leicestershire village were evacuated.

    Police went to a property on Vicarage Close, Newbold Coleorton, earlier and an Army bomb disposal team was then called.

    Officers said there was no evidence of any links to terrorism.

    The suspect remains in custody and there is still a cordon in place, police said.

    Bomb disposal experts, police, paramedics and the fire service are currently attending an incident in a Leicestershire village.

    Residents told the BBC that some people had been told to leave their homes in Vicarage Close, Newbold Coleorton. The road has been cordoned off.

    East Midlands Ambulance Service said it sent paramedics and a Hazard Area Response Team to assist police at 14:06 BST.

    Leicestershire Police has been contacted for comment.

    Just 28% of 644 youngsters were woken up by a standard smoke alarm, a study has found.

    The University of Dundee and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service called on manufacturers to warn parents that sleeping children may not hear the alarm.

    But the study also found an alarm using a lower frequency sound, combined with a voice recording, woke more than 75% of the children.

    The research will be featured on the BBC One show Watchdog on Thursday.

    A High Court case between the Labour Party and a suspended MP has been adjourned.

    Derby North politician Chris Williamson was reinstated to the party in June after being accused of anti-Semitism in February, but he was suspended again after a backlash from Jewish groups.

    He is suing the party, and has claimed his suspension is "unconstitutional".

    Judges at the High Court in London have reserved judgement in the case, and a decision could come next week.

    During the hearing, Labour's counsel said Mr Williamson's suspension case would be considered by the party's National Executive Committee in the second week of October.

    A woman who was airlifted to hospital after being trampled by a herd of cows is in a stable condition, Derbyshire Police have said.

    The walker was seriously injured in a Peak District field near Sheldon at about 15:45 BST on Tuesday. Her dog died in the incident.

    A passerby raised the alarm and the victim was later flown to hospital in Sheffield in a critical condition, but she is now stable.

    A pensioner with liver cancer who has twice had surgery to remove his tumour cancelled on the day it was due to take place says he fears time is running out for treatment.

    On two occasions the Leicestershire grandfather, who does not want to be named, has been admitted to Leicester General Hospital and waited six hours to be taken to theatre, only to then be sent home because there were no high dependency unit beds available in case of emergency.

    The 78-year-old told the Local Democracy Reporting Service staff were sobbing as they told him and "mortified" to deliver the news, adding the consultant was "livid" to have to send him home again.

    His family are awaiting a response from Charnwood MP Edward Argar.

    Officers made the discovery yesterday after reports of a water leak at a neighbouring property on Elm Bank Drive.

    A sculpture of a badger family has arrived at the courtyard outside Royal Derby Hospital.

    Artist Emma Parkins was commissioned by the charity Air Arts to make the sculpture, which is the largest she's ever made.

    She said: "I want people to smile and feel a sense of comfort when they look at them. They are giving people joy in what sometimes can be a time of great stress, sadness and anxiety."

    Ms Parkins added: "Slowly they will change and bio-degrade, but this has its own beauty and charm. Also during this time they will be used as a home for many insects, becoming a mini ecosystem.

    "I love this aspect of willow. I make eco-friendly art that has very little impact on the planet."

    It will officially be unveiled on Tuesday.

    The family of a 71-year-old cyclist who died after a collision with a lorry have said he was "young at heart" and "loved life".

    David Bates, from Clifton in Derbyshire, was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash near Ashbourne on Tuesday.

    An air ambulance attended the scene and the A515 was shut for several hours while officers investigated.

    Mr Bates's family said his death has left a "big hole" in their lives.

    Derbyshire Police said the 39-year-old driver of the lorry was "voluntarily interviewed" on Tuesday.

    The force has appealed for witnesses and any dashcam footage.

    Thick smoke bought the M69 to a standstill near Hinckley yesterday afternoon.

    Leicestershire Police put out a warning on Twitter at 15:00 saying smoke was drifting across the carriageway from a fire on a nearby field.
