Food and fuel is being stockpiled by Nottingham City Council as it prepares for Brexit.

It has been planning for a no-deal Brexit for months but the deputy leader Sally Longford has said it is now stepping up those preparations.

This has included filling its fuel depot and it is now buying non-perishable food for its school dinners and meals on wheels services.

Councillor Longford said she is "frustrated" by the government's "flippant" attitude towards no deal and thinks the city's poorest will be hit the hardest.

She added: "It strikes me that if you’re driving a Bentley you hardly notice a bump in the road. It’s a bit different if you’re driving a car that’s only just scraped through its MOT."

The government has said it remains confident of striking a deal before the UK leaves on October 31.

John Mann, the Labour MP for Bassetlaw and an independent government adviser on anti-Semitism, has been made a peer in former prime minister Theresa May's resignation honours list.

The 59-year-old, who was first elected in 2001, will sit in the House of Lords after receiving a non-affiliated peerage.

Mr Mann is standing down as MP, citing Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's handling of the party's anti-Semitism crisis.

He said he could not campaign for Mr Corbyn knowing he could become prime minister, and told the Sunday Times he would "never forgive" him for allowing the party to be "hijacked" by anti-Semites.

Mr Mann, often a critic of the House of Lords, tweeted in 2017 that it should be abolished.

The foundation is donating a grant of £800,000 towards the project - expected to cost £11.3m in total.

Leicester City chief executive Susan Whelan said the club was "very proud" to support the cathedral.

"The Foundation has aimed to support causes that make a difference to the lives of people in Leicester – an objective we remain wholly committed to in the delivery of Khun Vichai’s legacy.”

The money follows a donation from Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha to the cathedral in 2014 towards the reinterment of Richard III.

The Very Rev David Monteith, Dean of Leicester, said the money from the foundation was a "transformational gift".

The cathedral now needs to raise down to £2.3m to complete the project.

A dad has claimed he was "racially profiled", lost contact with his children and was made homeless as a result of a social services investigation.

The man also said he was made to visit places that were mental health "triggers", branded "intimidating" and accused of being a drug dealer by social workers investigating whether his children were safe at home.

The catalogue of errors made by Leicestershire County Council were revealed in an anonymised report after the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman investigated the man's complaints.

As a result, the ombudsman ordered the authority to pay the man £900, and recommended the authority amend its complaints procedure and review supervision arrangements.

A spokesman for the county council said it accepts the findings and has apologised to the man.

  14. Residents-only bus lane scheme trial proposedpublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 9 September 2019

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

A scheme which would allow residents of a housing estate in Nuthall to drive through a bus-only lane could be brought in.

It would be the first of its kind in the county – allowing residents of the estate to buy a pass for £25, and also ban non-residents from using the road at any time.

The bus gate is currently only accessed by public transport and it consists of a short section of road, which provides direct access to Nuthall roundabout from the junction of Nottingham Road and Roland Avenue at the edge of the Horsendale estate.

Supporters of the move to allow residents access say it could reduce traffic, but there are several critics of the idea, including Nottinghamshire Police.

Nottinghamshire County Council is set to vote on the matter on Thursday, and it would have to go out to public consultation after that.
