An inmate who was found hanged at HMP Nottingham had high levels of the psychoactive drug Spice in his system, a jury inquest has heard.

Marc Maltby, 23, from Chesterfield in Derbyshire, died on 12 October 2017.

He had arrived at the prison on 22 September after being recalled for breaching his licence conditions for an earlier sentence, served at other prisons.

Nottingham Coroner's Court was told Maltby had smashed up his cell earlier after a fallout with his cellmate, who was then moved out.

Assistant coroner for Nottinghamshire, Jonathan Straw, said one of the questions for the jury would be "how it was that Marc was in possession of drugs in his cell".

Mr Shaw told the jury on the day Maltby died, he had begun "smashing up his cell" and to stop prison officers being hit by anything being thrown out, they put a table tennis table as a screen outside the door.

After 18:00, a prisoner who went past the cell and looked in, saw Maltby hanging inside and raised the alarm.

Staff gave Maltby CPR, but after the ambulance service arrived, he was pronounced dead.

  5. Care home resident 'had faeces under nails'published at 13:42 British Summer Time 7 October 2019

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

A resident at an old people's home was left with faeces beneath their fingernails, a health watchdog report said.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspected the Lutterworth Country Care Home in June after the death of a resident, that was subject to a criminal investigation.

A coroner is currently reviewing the case.

In the CQC report, staff were criticised for putting women's slippers on a man with inspectors saying people were "not always well cared for or treated in a dignified way".

The report also stated people's hair not being brushed and another person wearing shoes without laces.

Residents' relatives raised concerns about personal care, with one telling inspectors: "There is sometimes faeces beneath [person's] nails."

The CQC said the care home required improvement across the board, which was a downgrading from a previous inspection in 2018.

Care home spokesman James Wood said managers were "disappointed that the home's rating had reduced", but "numerous changes" had been made since the inspection.

It was dropped by the then-prime minister while watching a film in London in 1953 and picked up by cinema usherette Violet King, Hansons Auctioneers said.
