    Police have made a safeguarding referral after finding a three-year-old girl sitting on the lap of another passenger in a car being driven by her father in Shirebrook.

    A picture of the incident, which was tweeted earlier by Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit, external, shows the little girl sitting on the lap of a man in a five-seater car that already contained five passengers.

    The force said: "Driver taking four friends to work. Where to put the sixth passenger, his 3 year old daughter?

    "The lap of one of his friends... unbelievable. Ticket and safeguarding referral made."

    UK law dictates children must normally use a child car seat, external until they're 12 years old or 135cm tall.

    A man who intended to run as an independent candidate in Rutland and Melton has passed away.

    Anthony Watchorn was 69 years old, and had been campaigning in the area. He was due to attend a hustings on Monday.

    His sister Rosalind told the Melton Times: "Anthony was taken to hospital yesterday afternoon and his condition got worse.

    "He sadly passed away this morning at Peterborough Hospital."

    A bus has crashed with a car and hit the central reservation of the A46 near Leicester, closing the road.

    The crash initially saw the dual carriageway closed in both directions between the A50 at Groby and the A5630 at Beaumont Leys. One lane has now reopened northbound.

    Leicestershire Police said the crash happened at 06:57.

    A spokesman added: "No serious injuries have been reported and no arrests have been made."

    Highways England said drivers should expect long delays around Leicester.
