University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) is searching for personal protective equipment (PPE) suppliers amid the coronavirus outbreak.

It has described it as an "information gathering exercise" to identify those who could supply or manufacture PPE should it need additional supplies in future.

Thousands of items of PPE have already been donated to UHDB staff in recent weeks to protect them while treating Covid-19 patients.

They include goggles, gloves, surgical masks and protective suits from the University of Derby and 10,000 surgical masks from Rolls-Royce.

The search comes amid nationwide concerns over equipment shortages across the country, with Health Secretary Matt Hancock insisting the required stocks exist, but there had been challenges in distribution.

A UHDB spokesman said the tender had no value attached to it and was "not a contract in any way".

He added: "This was an information gathering exercise by the trust to discover suppliers who may be able to supply and/or manufacture PPE should we need additional supplies in the future."

A number of specialist assessment centres or "hot hubs" have been created to help coronavirus patients.

The NHS Derby and Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said many of the hubs will be in GP surgeries but a number of stand-alone units are also being set up in Derby city centre.

The first hub will be at the University of Derby with a further two to be announced later.

The centres will be available on an appointment-only basis for "acutely ill patients" and staffed by GPs, nurses and healthcare assistants - no walk-in patients will be allowed.

Appointments will be made following a phone conversation between the patient and their local GP.

We are aware that people will be looking to walk their dogs as part of their daily exercise in open spaces at this time, but please remember to respect our farming communities. Calving and lambing is important to our rural economies and if livestock are harmed then this increases pressure on farmers and also our local vets.
