    A man has been arrested in connection with 23 shop thefts in Nottinghamshire.

    The thefts were from retail premises in the Ashfield area with the most recent at a garage on Sutton Road, Huthwaite, on Monday.

    Nottinghamshire Police said the 34-year-old remains in custody for questioning.

    Det Sup Kevin Broadhead said communities and businesses were working through "some incredibly challenging times" and the force would continue to "protect them from offences".

    Police in Glossop are putting up posters warning motorists and residents about "unnecessary travel".

    The messages say people going for their daily exercise "should be walking, running or cycling from your home address" and "should not be driving to a location away from home".

    The safer neighbourhood policing team, external for the town said it is placing the posters "on vehicles in various locations in our area".

    Derbyshire Police has put out the messages despite being heavily criticised over its use of drones to monitor walkers in the Peak District, with its chief constable yesterday admitting the force had no powers to stop people going for a walk in the countryside.

  4. 'Sexual predator' who pushed one victim into canal jailedpublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 1 April 2020

    A man who sexually assaulted a number of women, one of which he pushed into a canal, has been jailed.

    Dirson Christopher Jimenez Santana, 29, of Nugent Street, Leicester, admitted four counts of sexual assault and one count of assault in Leicester between 20 August and 2 October 2019.

    Leicestershire Police said when one victim challenged Santana after he touched her breasts, he pushed her into the water on the canal towpath in St Augustine Road.

    He was sentenced to three years and six months in prison and placed on the sex offenders register for life at Leicester Crown Court.

    Det Sgt Jenny Tattersall described Santana as a "predatory sexual offender".

    "He followed these lone women before approaching them and subjecting them to a distressing assault," she said.

    "One of the women told police that her mental health has dramatically deteriorated since her assault while another added she has been left feeling anxious and nervous walking out alone at all times of the day."

    Ms Tattersall added there is a "strong possibility" Santana may have assaulted other women, and has urged other potential victims to come forward to police.

    A Derby doctor has started a 24-hour static cycling challenge in memory of a colleague who died after contracting coronavirus.

    Amged El-Hawrani, 55, an ear, nose and throat consultant at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Trust, died at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester on Saturday.

    Dr Mark Johnston, who is also an ear, nose and throat consultant, said: "A colleague in your own department gives you a sense of reality to the challenge we face."

    He said the cycling would "certainly be a challenge, but the family will help out".

    The money raised would be donated to the trust's charity.

    Mr Johnston added: "It's a tough time at the moment.

    "We are preparing for when Covid really strikes the hospital and the community."

    Nottingham Trent University is using food grown in its vertical farms - a new method of agriculture using technology to try and make the process more controlled and efficient - to help feed homeless people across the county who are struggling during the coronavirus crisis.

    The university runs two such facilties through its School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences, which it says can produce more nutritious crops with bigger yields and faster harvest cycles.

    Boxes of vegetables such as lettuce, pak choi and spinach have been donated to Tracy’s Street Kitchen, which helps to make and distribute food to people living on the streets.

    The Peak District National Park Authority says it has received reports of unauthorised closures of footpaths and legal rights of way.

    It said unofficial signs had been erected by footpaths with some being closed-off or blocked for access in Buxton and Hayfield, Derbyshire.

    It said some Peak District residents had been prevented from being able to exercise locally, while those who are key workers have reported their route to work being inaccessible and their cars being targeted with signs about staying at home.

    Sarah Fowler, chief executive of the authority, said: "I can understand a reaction to the high numbers of visitors we saw last week could, for some, be seen as needing to set up makeshift closures and blockages to rights of way.

    "However, this is unauthorised activity... there have been no changes to rights of way legislation as a result of the Covid-19 measures."

    The authority said any signs referencing the Peak District being closed were not in line in their official signage and thanked people who had listened to advice and stayed at home, or exercised closer to home.

    Police are in "a difficult position" in dealing with the public while helping efforts to minimise the coronavirus outbreak, the chief constable of Derbyshire Police has said.

    The force has been criticised for using drones to monitor walkers in the Peak District, and yesterday ex-Supreme Court judge Lord Sumption said its actions went against the tradition of policing in the UK.

    Peter Goodman told BBC Radio 5 Live his officers "never expected to be asked by the government to play the role that we're playing", and said he wanted his officers to use "explanation and conversation" to ensure the public are adhering to guidelines on social distancing when exercising.

    A motorist has been taken to hospital after a car crashed into four parked vehicles in Glossop.

    Officers were called to the scene on High Street East at about 07:00 this morning.

    Derbyshire Police said, external the driver has "serious but not life-threatening" injuries, and urged any witnesses to contact officers.

    Police have released an image of a man they would like to speak to after money was taken from a cash machine in Derby.

    Derbyshire Police said a man was trying to withdraw his 76-year-old wife's pension money at about 14:45 on 17 March at a Co-op on Osmaston Road.

    The 73-year-old thought the cash machine was not working, so told the man behind him and went inside the store for help.

    The force said the cash was then dispensed and taken by the man outside.

    Anyone who recognises this man has been asked to contact them on 101.

    Police have made a renewed appeal for information over a car crash which has left a man in hospital with serious injuries more than a week later.

    The crash happened at about 18:20 on 19 March on the B582 Hunts Lane in Desford and involved a blue Ford Kuga and a silver Vauxhall Astra.

    Leicestershire Police said the driver of the Kuga, who was seriously hurt, remains at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham in a serious but stable condition.

    The driver of the Astra was treated in hospital before being discharged the next day.

    Det Con Pete Davies said: "At the time of the collision, the Astra was travelling from the direction of Newbold Verdon towards Desford while the Kuga was travelling in the opposite direction."

    He urged anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam footage to contact them on 101.
