It's not just picnics that teddy bears are having in one Nottinghamshire garden, thanks to one grandmother's idea to entertain children in her area.

Bev Norman, from Arnold, has set up displays of teddy bears at the beach, theatre and on a camping trip, with a new theme each day.

She has been arranging the teddies in her front garden every morning for the past three weeks during lockdown and said families have been stopping on their daily walks to enjoy them.

  3. Derbyshire moorland fire 'burnt bog restoration area'published at 14:04 British Summer Time 28 April 2020

    Samantha Noble
    BBC News Online

A moorland fire which has been burning for six days has destroyed an area where bog restoration work to improve the land for wildlife is taking place, the RSPB has said.

The fire at Rakes Moss, near Crowden in Derbyshire's Peak District, is still burning having started on Thursday.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) said it is unclear how much the blaze has cost them, but they estimated it has destroyed about £40,000 worth of its restoration work.

Breeding birds and other wildlife such as curlews, golden plovers, meadow pipits, and mountain hares are among the wildlife affected.

An RSPB spokeswoman said: "Bog restoration is where we wet the peat through the blocking of drainage channels, to restore the peat itself and plant species like cotton grass, other native grasses and sphagnum moss to encourage wetland bird species and improve their numbers.

"We had started to see good results for birds following the restoration, but the restoration was nowhere near finished, taking many years to fully restore after our interventions.

"So we will wait to see if the plants start to come back naturally, or if we will have to start again, but ultimately our aim is to make the site wetter to improve it for wildlife."
