A puppy has been found abandoned and living in his own faeces without water or food by police attending a report of a disturbance in Newark.

Officers found the four-week-old dog in an outbuilding in the Tolney Lane area at about 22:30 on Tuesday.

He was taken back to the station where he was looked after overnight and has now gone into foster care with other dogs until he's old enough to be re-homed.

Sgt Simon Brooks said: "We were carrying out a search of the vicinity and were shocked to come across the little pup who just stared back at us wide-eyed, forlorn and helpless.

"We were devastated to see the disgusting conditions he was living in. He was clearly starving by the way he gulped down his food and water."

A Newark and Sherwood Disrict Council dog warden believes the dog, who hasn't been named, is a Chihuahua mixed with a Pomeranian.

Officers from Nottinghamshire Police are investigating, and ask anyone who recognises the puppy or has any information to get in touch.

Sgt Brooks added: "He's a great little character and we have not been short of volunteers to take the little lad home."
