The rate of coronavirus cases for Nottingham city has soared from just over 50 per 100,000 people to more than 280.
The figures up to the end of last week show a rise in all but one district of Nottinghamshire compared to the week before.
But director of public health for Nottingham, Alison Challenger, felt there were questions over the latest data.
She said: "We knew it was rising but this shows a very significant rise in the number of confirmed cases for the city and we don't have a full explanation for that at the moment.
"Public Health England are saying it was a technical issue over the weekend where transferring lab results to the reporting dashboard over the past few days does not appear to have happened in the way that it should."
The rates per 100,000 in the week to 1 October, compared to the previous week are: Nottingham - 52.0 - 283.9; Newark and Sherwood - 44.9 - 116.8; Rushcliffe - 49.1 - 103.5; Gedling - 26.3 - 87.4; Ashfield - 46.1 - 71.1; Bassetlaw - 20.4 - 67.3; Mansfield - 37.5 - 37.5.
