Councillors have told one of the UK's oldest schools to rebuild an "ornate" gate that it had removed without permission.
At an Erewash Borough Council planning meeting, councillors said the removal of the gate by Ockbrook School in Derbyshire was a “travesty”.
They agreed that either the old gate, which was 120 years old, should be reinstated or an exact replica should be built and installed, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reports.
One described it as "arguably one of the best in Erewash".
Jeff Shipway, head master at the private boarding school, said: "Drawings are currently being prepared to build a replica gate, which will be made to match the previous historic gate exactly."
In 2019, Ockbrook School, which was founded in 1799, took down the historic gate due to alleged public safety concerns following “rot” and “deterioration beyond repair”.
