A council is to upgrade some of its bus shelters to install either a living roof or solar panels.
Leicester City Council said the plant-topped living roofs - nicknamed Bee Bus Stops - will feature on 30 shelters across the city, including Charles Street, London Road and Melton Road.
Each is planted with a mix of wildflowers and Sedum plants to help enhance local biodiversity and add some extra greenery, the authority added.
Where feasible, all other new bus shelters will be fitted with solar panels, powering smart lighting, to cut energy use.
The council said the city-wide network of living roof and solar-powered shelters will be a first for any UK city.
Deputy city mayor, councillor Adam Clarke - who leads on environment and transportation - said: "The new, modern shelters will be great for passengers and the mix of solar power and living roofs is another step forward for our ambition to be a carbon neutral, biodiverse and climate-adapted city by 2030."

King's Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield has now given more than 100,000 coronavirus vaccinations.
The milestone was reached on Wednesday when Joe, Mikey and Ben Fleet-Chapman, from South Clifton near Newark, were vaccinated together.
The brothers, aged 27, 25 and 22 were eligible as their father has recently had a heart transplant and is classed as vulnerable.
Joe Fleet-Chapman, who received the hospital's 100,000th vaccine, said: "It’s reassuring that we have been able to be vaccinated due to having someone vulnerable at home.
"We needed to get vaccinated to protect dad and stop any spread of the virus in our household."
Mikey Fleet-Chapman added: “Now we are vaccinated, we can move more freely around the home without having to worry as much, it’s a real weight off our minds.”

Nottingham's Victoria Embankment is to permanently close to through traffic.
The city council has confirmed the plans to keep the street traffic-free saying it will make the area "a safer, more attractive environment for people to enjoy".
It carried out a trial in August last year and, in March, consulted more than 1,500 people, including many who live in the nearby Meadows area.
The authority said of those people surveyed, 54% supported the proposal and said they enjoyed the street more.
Councillor Rosemary Healy said the council had taken the decision to progress with the plans based on the outcome of the consultation, as well as its traffic monitoring.
“Creating a traffic-free environment has improved access to the riverside, parks and gardens," she said.
"We’ve received a lot of positive feedback from both residents and visitors who have found the space quieter and safer, and enjoyed using it more."
This route is one of many in the city where changes are planned in a bid to make walking and cycling easier.
They include a 20mph speed limit around the city centre, improvements in Derby Road, a toucan crossing on Low Wood Road and improvements outside 15 schools.
The 30 ram sculptures will be on show in Derby city centre until 22 August.

Two police officers needed hospital treatment after they were "punched, kicked and thrown across the room" during an arrest.
Nottinghamshire Police said it happened at a hotel on Mansfield Road, Nottingham at about 15:00 on Tuesday.
The officers were responding to a call from hotel staff who reported finding a bag of cannabis in one of the rooms.
Police said a man entered the hotel's reception while the officers were carrying out a search of the scene and assaulted the officers as they detained him.
Both officers suffered head and leg injuries requiring hospital treatment.
A large quantity of cannabis was seized as well as a handbag, bank card and a laptop that was reported stolen earlier this month.
PC Jeremy Beard, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Both officers bravely continued to detain a suspect despite suffering injuries.
"They used PAVA spray and needed further emergency assistance from officers to make the arrest."
A 23-year-old man was detained on suspicion of assaulting two police officers, theft and possession with intent to supply cannabis.

A bearded dragon has died after being found by the side of a road in Nottinghamshire.
The RSPCA said the reptile was found in a grass verge along Landcroft Lane in Sutton Bonington on Tuesday 11 May by a member of the public.
The charity was called and inspector Dave McAdam took it to see a vet.
It was diagnosed as suffering from metabolic bone disease, which is caused by the lack of UV light, and later died "despite the best efforts of all involved".
Mr McAdam said: "The area where this poor bearded dragon was found was in beautiful countryside in the middle of nowhere and as he was suffering from metabolic bone disease, displayed by deformed legs and tail, it just doesn’t seem realistic that this dragon made it there by himself and I can only assume he's been abandoned.
"Abandoning a reptile or releasing unwanted exotic pets into the wild is cruel and illegal."
The RSPCA has asked for anyone with information on who may have owned this bearded dragon to contact them.

Dovedale in Derbyshire has been named as one of the seven natural wonders of the UK by the Royal Geographical Society (RGS).
The Peak District valley, famous for its stepping stones, was included in the list alongside other famous beauty spots including Dorset's Jurassic Coast and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.
Dovedale is a stretch of the Dove Valley where the River Dove passes through dramatic limestone ravines.
Mary-Ann Ochota, from the RGS, said: "One of the few positives to come out of the pandemic is the opportunity many of us have had to explore the natural wonders on our doorsteps.
"These seven locations are really extraordinary. I think most of us would be amazed to learn that they’re right here in our own country."

A vigil has been held in Nottingham to mark a year since the death of George Floyd.
It was one of several events to take place in the UK yesterday marking the first anniversary.
Mr Floyd, a black man, was stopped by police in Minneapolis and died after being held down by a white police officer, who has since been found guilty of murder.
Campaigners gathered in Old Market Square and stood in silence for nine-and-a-half minutes - the same amount of time that Derek Chauvin knelt on the neck of George Floyd.
Janelle Brown from the Next Gen Movement campaign group said people were still experiencing racism but there had been some improvement in the past year.
"What we've seen is people are having conversations with their friends, with their families," she said.
"Schools and businesses are looking at their policies.
"I feel like people are more open and understanding to educate themselves."
