  8. Leicester ramps up Covid vaccinationspublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

    BBC News

Authorities in Leicester will be "increasing the pace" of coronavirus vaccinations over the next two weeks to help stop the spread of the virus, especially the Indian variant.

The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) and Leicester City Council are opening five new temporary drop-in vaccination services today at:

    • Coleman Neighbourhood Centre
    • Eyres Monsell Community Centre
    • Fosse Neighbourhood Centre
    • Hamilton Library
    • De Montfort Hall

A sixth new drop-in vaccination service is also expected to open at Tudor Community Centre soon.

Extra slots are being made available at the hospital hubs and there will be more GP-led drop-in clinics, including ones at Merridale Medical Centre and Prajapati Hall.

The CCG said: "Although cases of the variant are relatively low in Leicester compared to other areas, the plans have been put in place to help prevent the number of cases from rising."

The city council asked the government for more vaccines to be on the "front foot" to tackle cases of the Indian variant.

Earlier Professor Ivan Browne Leicester's director of public health said government advice urging people not to travel into and out of the city to tackle the spread of the variant, was incorrect.

  9. Covid: New government advice for Leicester 'incorrect'published at 15:10 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

Government advice that emerged urging people not to travel into and out of areas hit by the Indian coronavirus variant - including Leicester - was incorrect, Leicester City Council has said.

The guidance for Kirklees, Bedford, Burnley, Leicester, Hounslow and North Tyneside says people in these areas should try to avoid meeting indoors.

However, the city's director of public health Professor Ivan Browne said representatives from the authority met with government officials today after they became aware of the updated guidance that was issued on Friday without an announcement.

He said: "These officials confirmed there are no restrictions on travel in or out of each of our areas and it was a mistake to suggest there was.

"There are no local lockdowns and there is no justification for Leicester to be treated differently to the rest of the country.

"No-one from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) or Public Health England contacted us about this advice, to explain the rationale behind it or give any other information.

"As it stands, Leicester has lower rates of the variant than other parts of the country, and we have a plan in place for stepping up our vaccination rate as agreed with the government last week.

“We always suggest that people should take a cautious approach and make sensible judgements when restrictions are eased as part of the government’s roadmap, and that still applies."

Leicester City Council has said it was not told that the government had issued new advice, which urges people not to travel into or out of the city, due to cases of the Indian coronavirus variant.

Leicester is one of eight areas where the Department of Health and Social Care has told people to avoid meeting indoors.

The latest advice was published on the government's website on Friday without an announcement.

The city council said it had not been informed of the rationale behind the decision and hoped a meeting today with central government and Public Health England would give more details.

A council statement said: "As it stands, Leicester has lower rates of the variant than other parts of the country, and we have a plan in place for stepping up our vaccination rate as agreed with the government last week.

"The new advice on the government’s website is just that, and we don’t have any evidence as to why people or businesses in Leicester should not continue to follow the existing national guidance.

"We always suggest that people should take a cautious approach and make sensible judgments when restrictions are eased as part of the government’s roadmap, and that still applies."

The authority said residents should take precautions when mixing indoors such as ventilating rooms and following the rule of six or two households.

Shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth, who is also Labour MP for Leicester South, described the situation as a local lockdown "by the back door" and called for the new guidance to be removed., external
