  18. Diwali celebrations returning to Leicesterpublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

Diwali celebrations are returning to the streets of Leicester after the pandemic forced them to move online last year.

Festivities on the city's famous Golden Mile usually attract thousands of people so efforts have been made to try to stop groups congregating in the same place.

This means the firework display - usually the main event on Diwali - will no longer take place.

Instead, there will be a Fire Garden set up in Cossington Street recreation ground and a rainbow light will be beamed across the city.

The main stage is also being replaced with giant screens on Belgrave Road and Cossington Street Recreation Ground showing a pre-recorded cultural programme.

Councillor Piara Singh-Clair, from Leicester City Council, said: “The new format of the Diwali events means that people can enjoy the sights and sounds of our Diwali celebrations at any point during the evening, and won’t need to congregate in one space."

The Diwali lights switch-on takes place on 24 October and Diwali is on 4 November.

The city council is still finalising its plans for Christmas celebrations but the ice-rink is expected to return to Jubilee Square.

  20. New walkway opens at former Broadmarsh sitepublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

    Heather Burman
    BBC News

A new walkway through Nottingham's former Broadmarsh shopping centre has opened this morning.

The pedestrian link, which has been moved slightly to the east and connects the city centre and Nottingham railway station, will allow the first stage of demolition of part of the shopping centre to get fully under way, the city council said.

The authority said the new wider route had been upgraded with bespoke flooring, lighting and CCTV and was intended to be open 24/7.

The walkway's Listergate and Collin Street entrances feature new artwork by local artists as part of a collaboration with the Nottingham Street Art project.

The council said once the demolition of the western part of the shopping centre was complete, which includes the old Argos, BHS and Boots stores, it would "create a new space which will be developed as new public realm" linking the city centre and an area to the south which is also being redeveloped.

Leader David Mellen, said: “Since taking over responsibility of the site after intu’s collapse, we have moved quickly to gather views about how the area could be developed, and have recruited an advisory group who are all giving their time for free and an acclaimed designer to come forward with a masterplan."
