    Three schools have closed and residents have been told to shut their windows after a fire at a disused building.

    Overnight 12 crews were called to the fire at the old Bramcote School site behind Bramcote Leisure Centre in Nottinghamshire.

    The A52 was closed in both directions but was reopened by about 7:00.

    The fire is now being brought under control but residents and drivers passing by have been advised to keep their windows shut.

    Three local schools - Bramcote College, Foxwood Academy and the Bramcote Hills Primary School - have been closed for the day.

    Several cows have been left seriously injured after a lorry carrying them crashed in Nottinghamshire.

    The lorry had 39 cows on board when it crashed into two parked cars and a house just after 04.30 BST on the A606 in Upper Broughton near Melton.

    One side of the road is currently closed while the vehicle is recovered. A vet has been called to treat the animals.

    A fire service spokesman added no people were injured.

    Half of the 10 local authorities with the highest rates of Covid-19 in England are in Leicestershire, according to latest figures.

    The number of infections per 100,000 people in the week up to 11 September was 593 in North West Leicestershire, up from 469 the previous week and behind only Corby's rate of 676.

    Hinckley and Bosworth has the fourth highest rate with 560, representing a steep increase on 449 from the previous seven-day period, while Blaby (538), Charnwood (478) and Oadby and Wigston (476) also feature highly.

    Mike Sandys, director of public health for Leicestershire, has said schools in the county going back early may have contributed to the rise.

    He told BBC East Midlands Today: "We've never had so many districts in the county in the top 10 at any one time, so it is concerning.

    "I think there are some reasons as to why we are so high at the top of the table at the moment and that is to do with the schools going back early. We've got particularly high rates in the 11-16 age group at the moment."

    A burglar has absconded from an open prison in Derbyshire after being let out on day release.

    Derbyshire Police said Michael Yeo, 25, was due to return to HMP Sudbury at 16:00 on Tuesday.

    He was serving a six-year sentence for burglary and attempted burglary.

    Yeo has links to the Norfolk, Suffolk, and Kent areas and is described as white, 5ft 10ins tall and of slim build, with blue eyes and brown hair.

    Officers have asked anyone who has seen him or knows of his location to get in touch.

    Money has been stolen from a petrol station cash machine in Castle Donington after it was rammed with a van overnight.

    Leicestershire Police said it happened in Station Road at about 00:45.

    The highest award a council can bestow has been given to Leicester City Football Club.

    Charnwood Borough Council has handed the club the Freedom of the Borough of Charnwood award in recognition of its recent success and connection to the area.

    The 2016 Premier League champions opened a £100m training facility in the borough last year at Seagrave.

    While the title-winning women's team are also based locally, playing home matches in Quorn.

    Several representatives from the club were at last night's meeting to receive the recognition.

    Leicester City's manager Brendan Rodgers said: "It's a huge honour for everyone involved in the club and to be given it after the success of the FA Cup, we're obviously very proud."

    The team's goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel added: "It's a nice recognition of the work the club does in the community."

    Police have released images of a man they would like to speak to after a pregnant woman reported being assaulted on a tram.

    It happened when the 26-year-old woman was on the Clifton South tram on 20 July between 23:50 and 00:15 near to the Wilford Lane area.

    Nottinghamshire Police said after she witnessed a man allegedly drunk involved in an altercation with another member of the public, the victim stepped in but was assaulted in the process.

    PCSO Jodie Turner said: “This was an unprovoked attack on a vulnerable victim who was pregnant at the time of the assault and who was only trying to protect another member of the public.

    “But thankfully her pregnancy did not suffer as a result of this assault.

    “We would like to speak with anyone who may recognise this man or who saw anything on the tram on the evening of the incident."

    A Nottingham Express Transit (NET) spokesman added: “Fortunately incidents such as this are extremely rare on the tram, which is one of the safest forms of transport.

    "However we take any incidents very seriously and work closely with the police to identify those responsible."

    The University of Nottingham is planning to open a new city centre campus.

    It has made an offer to purchase the Castle Meadow site near Nottingham Castle that is currently occupied by seven office buildings.

    The 32,500sqm space has been on the market for £36m.

    The university says the new campus will potentially become a base for final year and postgraduate students on professional practice-based courses.

    It also hopes to offer opportunities for collaboration with local business and industry.

    Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West said: “Having a campus in the city, with transport links that offer a gateway beyond the region, will help enhance our civic agenda.

    “For students in particular the site could enable greater and more convenient links with regional business and industry through placements, entrepreneurship, and collaboration to deliver a professional and practice-based curriculum, enhancing their graduate employment skills and opportunities to remain and work in the city."

    The university is expecting the purchase to complete during the autumn so that renovation work can begin in 2022.

    A man has died after he was found injured in the road in Nottingham.

    Nottinghamshire Police said emergency services were called to Weekday Cross shortly after 4:30.

    A cordon remains in place and the road has been closed but his death is not being treated as suspicious, officers said.

    There were no trams between Old Market Square and Toton Lane/Clifton South first thing this morning but services were up and running again by about 7:00.

    Det Insp Mark Shaw, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are still in the early stages of our investigation but do not believe this incident to be suspicious."
