  4. Family's £30k flood defences fail to stop damagepublished at 15:34 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January

    BBC Radio Nottingham

Karen Kennedy, who lives in Main Street, Woodborough, north-east of Nottingham, says she has spent more than £30,000 on flood defences for her home.

Despite building a wall around the perimeter of the property, family possessions have still been damaged by flood water, including cars owned by her husband and daughter.

Ms Kennedy said: “It’s just horrific. We’ve not even completely cleaned up from last time we were flooded.

"It’s just devastating. All the hard work and money that’s spent, you could just cry. We’re stuck.

"We can’t move. We can’t get out of it. We’re trapped now."

    Karen mopping

She said she may not receive an insurance settlement until the end of May.

“It’s not a great start to the year, but you’ve got to try and stay positive," added Ms Kennedy.

"Not only have we lost sentimental things in the house, my daughter lost her car. She’d only just passed her driving test.

“It’s just feeling very alone with it. I know the council has got its own issues going on, but we’re just left. We have to, as a community, as a village, try to protect ourselves and each other."

    Matt Taylor
    BBC News

The A52 in Nottinghamshire is closed westbound between the A46 (Saxondale) and the A6011 (Gamston) due to flooding.

National Highways teams have been working through the night to clear the floodwater, but there is currently no estimated time for the carriageway to reopen.

The diversion route advises drivers to take the exit onto the A46 from the A52 Saxondale Island, before taking the first exit onto the A6097 at the next roundabout and to continue until the village of Lowdham.

At the roundabout with the A612, turn left and follow the road to Nottingham for 11.5km, and follow signs for the A6011 at the A612/A6011 roundabout.

After 250m, turn left onto Lady Bay Bridge and continue to re-join the westbound A52 at Gamston Island.

Continue over the mini roundabout once in Retford, before taking a right onto Arlington Way at a signalised junction.

Carry on straight ahead until turning left at the A638/A620 junction, and go straight through the Morrison's junction and straight over the next roundabout on the A638.

For 13km, carry on through through the villages until you reach the A614 Blythe Interchange, where you can rejoin the A1 northbound.

“The first time we got flooded, we’d been open for about six months. It damaged the brake rollers, it was about £5,000 worth of damage."

He added that "times are hard" with rising bills and said that the worst thing was the inability to trade while the flood water is on site.

"It’s frustrating. It’s demoralising. It’s hard to find the motivation to want to get up in the morning and come to work, but we have to do what we have to do," said Mr Furniss.
