  3. Samaritans seeks new volunteerspublished at 17:50

    An Oxfordshire branch of the Samaritans, external is on a recruitment drive to find volunteers to answer the phones to those in desperate need of help.

    The charity in Banbury received almost 22,000 calls to its helpline in the past year and a further 20 people are needed to help the 56 volunteers in the town answering calls.

    Volunteer Ruth Brown said: "We have quite a bit of feedback from our callers who say that by talking to us they have been able to move forward or seek help. Overall, I think we do reduce suicide."

  4. Free gym equipment for public installed in Oxford parkspublished at 17:44

    Gym equipment free for the public to use has been installed in Oxford parks after a £316,000 investment.

    The equipment, including exercise bikes, running machines and crossfit machines, can be found on five fitness trails to be officially opened on Friday, external.  

    Each of the stations has instructions on the exercises that can be done, with some including QR codes to allow people with smartphones to watch a brief demonstration.

  5. Evening TV: Witney shop sign-up for scheme to help vulnerablepublished at 17:40

    On South Today tonight: Businesses in Witney have signed up to a new campaign to help vulnerable people in need of extra support.

    Nearly 20 shops in the town are working with the district council as part of the Safe Place project.

    It means those with learning difficulties, dementia or mental health needs will be able go into that shop for further advice.

  7. Four-year-old girl in hospital after Oxford crashpublished at 17:26

    A four-year-old girl received a head injury after a collision with a car in West Way in Oxford.

    South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) was called just after 15:30 and took the victim to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

    SCAS said the car was travelling at approximately 20mph.

  8. Travel latest: Roadworks causing delays in Oxford and Islippublished at 17:09

    • It's taking about 20 minutes to get through the roadworks on the A40 at the Wolvercote and Cutteslowe Roundabouts in Oxford
    • The A34 is looking heavy in patches northbound between Abingdon and Hinksey Hill
    • A set of temporary traffic lights are causing delays in Islip, on the B4027 Wheatley Road bridge

  9. Fire at Headington telephone exchangepublished at 17:01

    There was a fire at the telephone exchange on London Road in Oxford this morning.

    Crews from Oxford, Wheatley and Didcot attended, and removed an industrial battery from the building that was found to be the source of the fire.

  10. Downing Street Christmas tree felledpublished at 16:49

    It's that time of year when you might be thinking about buying your Christmas tree, but a tree grower from Oxfordshire has had the difficult task of selecting one for 10 Downing Street, external.

    It's the third time Andrew Ingram, from Christmas Common, has won the honour, and the 20ft (6m) fir was chosen and felled earlier.

    It will go on display outside the prime minister's home next week.   

  11. Cornbury Festival announce Friday line-uppublished at 16:37

    Jamie Cullum, Soul II Soul, Lemar and Wilko Johnson are all to star at the Cornbury Music Festival, external, organisers have announced.

    The festival, which runs from 8-10 July, is running a full Friday programme for the first time next year.

  12. Oxford vigil in support of Syriapublished at 16:24

    A vigil is being held in Oxford this evening, external by groups who "stand in solidarity with the Syrian and Iraqi peoples".

    Oxford Students' Arab Cultural Society, Rhodes Must Fall Oxford, Oxford Campaign for Racial Awareness and Equality and Oxford Students' Palestine Society organised the event, which is taking place in Cornmarket Street at 19:00.

  13. Coming up on Drivetime with Andrew Peach: Oxford's new air routepublished at 15:57

    On the show this afternoon: Come the spring, you'll be able to take a direct flight from Oxford Airport to Edinburgh after the Department for Transport announced a share of £7m of taxpayers money will go to a company called Linksair to help them start-up this route.

    We'll be finding out how hard it is to run a regional airline and assessing the chance of success for the new venture.

    In the early 1930s Albert Einstein visited Oxford three times, staying in Christ Church and lecturing on his theory of relativity.

  15. Woman hit by train 'was missing person'published at 15:27

    Following the death of a woman at Didcot Parkway station earlier, Thames Valley Police says it is no longer searching for Deborah Yalcin, external, who was reported as missing this morning.

    Formal identification has not yet taken place, but police believe the body is that of Deborah Yalcin.

    Her next of kin have been informed.

  16. Schoolgirl victim of attempted robberypublished at 15:13

    A nine-year-old girl was the victim of an attempted robbery in Witney, external yesterday.

    At about 15:30 the girl was walking along a cycle path near Hollis Close when she was approached by a man carrying a small knife and demanding money.

    The victim ran away towards Coggs Hill Road.

  17. Rare organ that starred at Oxford Odeon to be auctionedpublished at 14:53

    An exceptionally rare antique organ that used to be played at the Odeon on Magdelen Street, Oxford is up for auction at Ewbanks Auctioneers, external.
