  4. Oxford community bus service 'looking to expand'published at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    A community transport scheme run by the social enterprise company Aspire is looking to expand, despite the dial-a-ride service facing funding cuts.

    It provides a bus to take vulnerable people to clubs and appointments in and around Oxford and many of its users say they would be left lonely and isolated without it.

    Aspire says it may have to start charging for the service.

    The Environment Agency and recovery experts have arrived to try and rescue a stranded narrow boat on the River Thames.

    Engineers will try and winch One Old Peculiar out of the water after it came loose on Monday and crashed into Botley Bridge.  

    Owner John Simmonds, who said he has been overwhelmed by offers of support, believes the boat was deliberately untied.

    The father of an Oxford man who reportedly travelled to Iraq to join the so-called Islamic State group has said it is "crazy" he can't send money to his son.

    John Letts told Channel 4 News, external he and his wife, who deny the claims about their son Jack, were arrested for sending him money for food and new glasses. 

    John Letts said: "I think it's crazy that we can't send a penny... to help him because we'll be seen as supporting terrorism."

    Oxford has been named the fittest city in the UK by two separate studies, with the number of people taking part in regular exercise on the increase, according to the city council, external.

    A survey of 2,000 adults found that Oxford residents do more exercise than those who live in other cities and Sport England's Active People Survey said that people in Oxford are now taking part in sport at least once a week.

  14. Rapist had 'unhealthy sexual fascination with adolescent girls'published at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    Oxford rapist Joseph Tsang, who fled to Hong Kong, has been extradited back to the UK to start his 15-year prison sentence.

    Passing sentence at Oxford Crown Court last October, Judge Patrick Eccles described him as "a predatory man with an unhealthy sexual fascination with adolescent girls".

    In victim impact statements, the girls Tsang abused, who were just 14 and 15 at the time, described how the "nightmare" of what he did to them changed their lives.

    North Oxford Action Against Homelessness has offered to pay a deposit on a rented property for her.

    Ann, who's in her 50s and works as a carer, said the gift was "magical".

    A rapist from Oxford who fled to Hong Kong has been extradited to the UK, external and begun his 15-year prison sentence.

    Joseph Tsang, 31, of Sandy Lane, Oxford, was convicted in August at the city's crown court of two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault.

    A £2m investment, external is planned for car parks in the Vale of White Horse area.

    The district council says it's going to carry out a study looking into how the money could be spent, over the next financial year, with work being carried out after April 2017.

    The money has been set aside as part of the council's budget which is being discussed by the cabinet today.
