  1. Fears over plans to use fire service for medical emergency callspublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 22 September 2016

The West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) says it has concerns about the idea of using firefighters to respond to medical emergencies.

The West Midlands is one of the only areas in the country which doesn't run a co-responder scheme, where firefighters go out to medical emergencies if they can reach the patient faster.

Murray McGregor, from WMAS, says there's a risk the fire service would not be able to respond if they were dealing with a medical emergency.

Imagine there's a call in a remote rural area that the fire service might be able to get to quicker than [the ambulance service], so it might make sense to send them - now imagine there's a fire in the same place. They can't go to that as well, they can't split themselves in half."

We're seeing significant reductions in cardiovascular disease, for example, and we've seen changes in the types of cancers that people are developing. But more needs to be done because we know that people especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, people in prisons, in mental health institutions, still have very high levels of smoking so we need to support the general population but also target our efforts as well
