The number of new cases of HIV in the West Midlands rose by 10% in 2015 - with 473 people newly diagnosed.
Thirty eight of those diagnosed had left it so late to go to the doctor they were diagnosed with Aids.
Public Health England says, external the rise is worrying and reinforces the importance of safe sex.
There are more than 6,000 people being treated for HIV in the region.

Shrewsbury Town get the chance for a bit of revenge over Fleetwood Town in the FA Cup this weekend.
They were beaten 3-0 recently and goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler told us he hoped that the cup could inspire the team again.
Shrewsbury have had a number of good cup runs in recent years and he's keen to see that continue.

Two Shropshire courts will be moving premises next year.
The Ministry of Justice says the Telford county and family court will relocate to the nearby magistrates' court building next summer.
And the crown court in Shrewsbury is moving to the vacant magistrates' court building (above) next August.
The closures are part of a long process of cuts within the courts service.
A seven-month project to restore some of the stained glass at St Alkmunds church in Whitchurch is due to come to an end this weekend, with the final panels being put back into place after a clean-up.
The glass and its lead frame had suffered all sorts of damage down the years as you can see from the before-and-after photos below.
The company brought in to do the work, Recclesia Ltd, external, nicknamed this panel the "tears of emulsion", because of the paint spilt on the man's face.
As you can see, it cleaned up nicely though.
The chief executive of Shropshire's two main acute hospitals says the planned urgent care centre in Telford would be much more than just a walk-in centre.
Under the latest NHS proposals, urgent care centres would be set up at both Shrewsbury and Telford. But all emergency medicine, requiring an ambulance, would be based in Shrewsbury.
Simon Wright (above) says there is confusion because there is a lot of variation in urgent care centres around the country and said that a relatively small number of people need emergency treatment.

A 17-year-old from Adams Grammar school will be part of the Telford Tigers squad this weekend, acting as back-up netminder.
Ted Thompson from Albrighton got the chance after the recent departure of Polish netminder Ondrej Raszka, and has been combining training with his school-work.
He said most of his school-mates didn't know he was playing for the Tigers, but he would try to make the most of the step-up to the senior team.

A couple who met on the Lions tour of Australia in 2013 have been speaking of their surprise, after head coach Warren Gatland recorded a video message for their wedding.
Harry and Rebecca Johnston were married at the home of the groom's parents in Shropshire and she said: "My initial reaction was pure shock. And then I got a bit teary as the Lions game played such a significant part in our relationship."
When the pair first met, they were the only Lions fans in a stadium full of Aussies and Harry said recalling that made him tearful - to the amusement of his wife.
"He managed to stifle some happy tears when I walked down the aisle but once he saw Gatland he was gone,” she said.

More emergency refuge areas could be added to motorways around the Midlands where hard shoulders have been converted into traffic lanes.
The Smart Motorway programme's been criticised by some because of a lack of places to stop.
Now Highways England is looking again at whether more lay-bys are needed in the "breakdown hot spots".
Campaigners opposing plans to expand a recycling centre are planning a protest in Telford tomorrow.
The privately run centre between Ketley and Overdale currently collects cardboard, but its owners want to reclaim other material in future.
UKIP parish councillor Bill Gilmour says they're worried about extra traffic, longer opening-hours, and the smell.
He is suggesting a weight limit on the road leading into the site or the creation of a new spur-road off junction six of the M54. Or failing that, he'd like the recycling centre moved somewhere else.
