The man in charge of drawing up plans for the future of healthcare in the county should step down, a leading Shropshire councillor says.

Simon Wright is the lead on the Sustainability and Transformation Plan, external (STP) board which has recommended moving hospital care out into the community wherever possible, but the plan has been criticised by NHS England.

Karen Calder, in charge of health at Shropshire Council, said because Mr Wright is also Chief Executive of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust, he is too focused on emergency care.

    Quote Message

There's some great talents in that STP board and they need to concentrate on their own areas and I think an independent chair will address some of the criticisms in the NHS response."

    Andy Giddings
    BBC Shropshire

Jon Edwards got in touch with us through the Your Questions section of the BBC website, to ask "Why is Wem known by locals as the treacle mines?"

Councillor Pauline Dee is always a good source of information about the town and she says there are two stories.

    Treacle

One is that there was a tanners in the town and that it gave off a glutenous by-product which looked a lot like treacle.

The other story involves a chemist shop in the town, run by a man called Mr Haynes.

During the war it was said that despite food-shortages, his shop never ran out of treacle, leading locals to joke that he had a treacle mine beneath the shop.

Other towns around the country also claim to have treacle mines, for various reasons, but of course you can't really mine treacle.

    Quote Message

Coming here, some people have said, you know it's a bit of a surprise almost. Is it really a good move? Time will tell ultimately, but I came with an idea of keeping us in the league and I know that that won't be easy. And that it will take a lot of fight and spirit, but I was up for that and I still am."

Sarah Probert (on the left) with Erin Bainbridge (dyslexic student of the year)

Sarah Probert only found out she was dyslexic when she was 18. She now teaches at North Shropshire College and was recently named Teacher of the Year at the county's dyslexia awards.

Despite that, she said she had had to battle early in life against labels such as "lazy".

    Quote Message

I fought very hard. I got myself to college. It was there that I met a lecturer who said look Sarah you're bright, there's something going on here. One of the first things I will say when I have a new group of students is 'I'm dyslexic', so there are no barriers. The sky is the limit."
