  2. Just one vote made difference in Ludlow supermarket backingpublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

Plans for a new supermarket at Rocks Green, on the edge of Ludlow, were given outline planning permission by Shropshire Councillors by just five votes to four, this afternoon.

The applicants are now expected to draw up an application for full planning permission and said they had listened to concerns from objectors and that the new store could create up to 180 jobs.

    Shropshire Council

But members of the Love Ludlow Group, who have fought the proposals because of concerns about traffic and the effect on town centre shops say they are worried that could be a formality now.

    Quote Message

I don't believe that some of the members really understood the implications of voting for this proposal. They seemed to be under the impression that they can make radical control over the final details to the scheme. Indeed a lot of people were confused in as much as they're thinking that all the reserved matters will come back to a full committee meeting. I don't believe that is the case."

  4. Police dog petition reaches nearly 25,000 signaturespublished at 17:26 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

A petition calling on West Mercia police to allow one of their dog-handlers to take his dog with him when he retires has now been signed by nearly 25,000 people.

Steve J Wooty wrote: "A thoroughly nice man, deserving his well earned retirement and as for keeping his beloved hound. That shouldn't even be questioned."

Mike Peberdy added: "Of course the policeman should keep his loyal and trusted friend. As someone who has had German Shepherds for over 40 years I know they have only one owner that they give 100% loyalty too."

But some disagree and John Fox wrote: "He should have sought (and obtained) agreement from his employer prior to starting with a new canine partner to the effect that he would be able to keep the dog in his retirement. I'm afraid I don't have a huge deal of sympathy for him now."

  5. Minister promises action on housing appealspublished at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

Local government secretary Sajid Javid has agreed with the MP for the Wrekin that changes need to be made to reduce the number of appeals by housing developers.

Mark Pritchard told Parliament earlier that he was worried developers could steamroller their plans through on appeal.

    Sajid Javid

Mr Javid said the government would be introducing a fee, which he hoped would deter some appeals in the future.

    Quote Message

Frankly some of them are frivolous cases and they should really not be appealed. And one of the reasons that happens is because currently there is no cost to making an appeal, it's a free thing to do."
