  2. Watch: Sikh martial arts being used to help children in Leedspublished at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    A form of martial arts is being used in Leeds to help keep children off the streets and out of trouble.

    Gatka is an Indian martial art which uses swords and stick fighting. People who use it call it the "mother of all martial arts". It was developed by Sikh gurus in the 17th century in Punjab. 

    It's now being used to give children a focus away from the streets of the city.

  3. Shortage of doctors in Bassetlaw forcing sick children to go elsewherepublished at 15:32 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    A recruitment problem in Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire means youngsters who are taken ill out-of-hours, are having to be moved to Sheffield or Doncaster hospitals.

    It's because the NHS can't recruit enough doctors and nurses to provide a safe service in Worksop.

  4. Reverend who disarmed warplane 'in accordance with his conscience'published at 15:23 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    A Leeds Methodist minister who allegedly tried to disarm warplanes bound for Saudi Arabia was acting in "accordance with his conscience" his church say.

    The Rev Dan Woodhouse (pictured right), 29, was arrested along with Sam Walton on suspicion of criminal damage over the weekend. They're accused of entering the BAE Systems site in Warton to disarm the planes.

    The Methodist church say that they "do not endorse criminal activity but acknowledge that he acted in accordance with his conscience."

    They also say that they will "continue to call on Methodists to write to their Members of Parliament to urge a suspension of further licences of arms sales to Saudi Arabia.“

    A woman's in hospital after being hit by a bus in Sheffield at the weekend.

    It happened at around 22.30 on Saturday, as the 62-year-old crossed Langsett Road, outside The Rawson Spring pub.

  6. Archbishop of York to lead girl's public funeralpublished at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    The details of a public funeral for Katie Rough have been released by her family. The service will be held at York Minster on Monday 13 February.

    The seven-year-old died earlier this month after being found with serious injuries in Woodthorpe in York. 

    The memorial service will be led by the Archbishop of York and anyone who attends is being asked to wear formal wear with a splash of colour.

    A private family service will be held later on the same day. 

    A 15-year-old girl, charged with murder, is due at Leeds Crown Court next month.

    A former soldier from Leeds who was left paralysed after being wounded in Iraq says he's "lost his dignity" after the council cut back his care.

    Adam Douglas used to have two carers morning and evening but now just has one. He says it means he can't always wash before going to work.   

    Adam was seriously injured by a rocket propelled grenade while serving in Iraq in 2003. He is paralysed from the waist down and he also has problems with his heart, kidneys and bladder.

    The organisers of the Harrogate Spring Flower Show want to get their hands on hundreds of old wellies. 

    It's because this year's theme is HortiCouture and they need 500 pairs to create lots of gardening/fashion crossovers.

    Wellies have been deemed the perfect choice as they are worn by gardeners and fashionistas alike: Think Kate Moss at Glastonbury.

    Dairy firm Arla Foods, whose UK headquarters is in Leeds, is going to invest more than £37m in its UK business this year.

    Rail passengers were delayed by more than an hour after a train conductor was left on the platform at one of the stops and a taxi had to be called to pick him up.

    The conductor got off the 08:16 Ilkley to Leeds service at Burley-in-Wharfedale, but the train pulled out of the station leaving him behind. 

    The train was stopped at the next station in Menston and passengers got off through the driver's cab. 

    Northern Rail said it was an "operating incident".

    More than 70 MPs are calling for Donald Trump to be banned from addressing Parliament, if his state visit to Britain goes ahead.

    Six MPs from the Sheffield City Region have signed the motion, including Clive Betts, Angela Smith, Sarah Champion, Michael Dugher, Toby Perkins and Dennis Skinner.

    More than £1.5m people have now signed a petition to cancel Mr Trump's state visit to the UK because of his travel ban.

    Award-winning actress Sheridan Smith, from Epworth in North Lincolnshire, says she's struck up a friendship with one of the women who led the search for abducted schoolgirl Shannon Matthews.

    Shannon disappeared from her home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, for more than three weeks in February 2008. 

    Her mother, Karen, was later jailed for eight years for her part in the abduction.

    Julie Bushby stood side-by-side with Matthews before police discovered Shannon's kidnapping.

    Sheridan Smith plays Ms Bushby in a new BBC drama about the case which starts next week, and the actress says she now counts her among her friends.

    Roundhay Park will not be home to a Go Ape aerial assault course, because a public consultation showed that a majority of people were against it.

    Leeds City Council say that they will now try and find an alternative site for the "high ropes adventure course."

    Go Ape says it's still keen to establish a site in the city, adding that one would create 35 jobs and see it invest £300,000 into which ever venue it can find.

    A special walk takes place tonight on the Moors. 

    The "Nightvision" walk will allow participants a rare chance to see local wildlife in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park after dark. 

    The event is a precursor to the Dark Skies festival, external, which begins on Saturday 18 February. 

    The park recently gained Dark Skies status, external for the darkness of their night skies and suitability for stargazing.
