  1. Two arrested for child neglect after baby left locked in 'hot car'published at 15:23 British Summer Time 8 June 2016

    A man and a woman from Stoke-on-Trent have been arrested after a one-year-old baby was left locked in a car for 30 minutes in temperatures of over 25C, external,

    Staffordshire Police say they had to break into the car which was parked on the Wolstanton Retail Park at around 17:50 yesterday evening.

    The force says the child was "visibly distressed" and was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital for treatment for heatstroke and dehydration. 

    Officers say, despite the windows being slightly wound down, the temperature inside the car was "dangerously high" - the man, 28, and woman, 24, were arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

    A man's been found guilty of the attempted murder of a man in Burton. 

    Staffordshire Police say the victim, Mohammed Aziz, 50, remains in hospital in a coma after being "deliberately" hit by a car, external on 20 July 2015.

    Today Nadeem Akhtar, 37, of Shobnall Street, Burton, was convicted of attempted murder but found not guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent. 

    A second man, Mohammed Zufeer, 27, of Horninglow Road North, Burton, was found guilty of assisting an offender - both men will be sentenced on a future date.

    An abandoned suitcase in bushes at the side of a Staffordshire University building triggered a security alert today.

    Staffordshire Police , externalsay they were called to Station Road in Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent just after 09:20.

    The force says it turned out to be an inflatable bed inside the case.

    Former Leeds United midfielder Bruno Ribeiro has emerged as the main challenger to Shefkfi Kuqi for the vacant manager's job at League One Port Vale, reports BBC Radio Stoke.

    The 40-year-old played for Leeds and Sheffield United in the late 1990s and former Blades teammate Michael Brown is on the coaching staff at Vale Park.

    Ribeiro's last job in management was at Bulgarian side Ludogorets in 2015.

    Vale have been without a manager since Rob Page joined Northampton Town.

    A van driver who was found guilty of killing a cyclist in Tamworth has been given a suspended prison sentence. 

    Dean Swift hit 58-year-old Paul Maguire from behind on the A5 in May, 2015. 

    Mr Maguire, from Paddington, London, was cycling ahead of family and friends when the crash occurred and suffered fatal injuries.

    Swift, 23, of Rosewood Park, Cheslyn Hay, was convicted of causing death by careless driving last month.

    Today he was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years, and banned from driving for 12 months.

  9. Continue registering to vote in EU referendum, David Cameron sayspublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 8 June 2016

    David Cameron has urged people to continue to register to vote after an online glitch ahead of the EU referendum registration deadline.

    The prime minister tweeted a link, external to the sign-up page and said "urgent discussions" were taking place to ensure people who register can vote.

    The Electoral Commission called for the registration deadline to be extended.

    The problems lasted from 22:15 BST on Tuesday until after the midnight deadline.

    The manager of the Crewe Heritage Centre has described the Flying Scotsman as an "iconic" train. 

    The steam locomotive came to the site yesterday evening to be serviced and will leave this afternoon.  

    Mike Lenz, the manager of the centre (featured in video), says the Flying Scotsman is the locomotive the general public always think of when they think of steam trains.

    It made its return to the railway lines of Britain this year following a £4.2m restoration project, which took 10 years.

    Emergency calls to Staffordshire Police via 999 reporting domestic violence have reached a five-year high, the force says.

    Almost 24,000 were made in the last year - a rise of 16% compared with half a decade ago. 

    The force says it's retrained hundreds of officers after a report published last year described the response given to victims as "a cause for concern".

    The government inspection said in December a number of officers discouraged victims reporting abuse and allegations were disbelieved.

    They say there could be scattered heavy showers this afternoon and have issued a yellow weather warning.
