    Police have charged a 34-year-old man with attempted rape and theft in connection with an incident in Sandbach. 

    Officers were called to the Salt Line on Sunday afternoon.

    A 200-year-old school bell has been unveiled at a school in Stafford.

    It was discovered at St Pauls Primary and has since been restored. 

    Staff there say the bell stands at around a foot tall so needs two teachers to lift it.

    Crews have been tackling a fire in a 12-metre high dairy fat container in Holmes Chapel.

    The fire started at 09:00 at agricultural feed supplier Massey Bros' premises in Cranage. 

    Nobody has been injured and people have been allowed back into nearby offices, Cheshire Fire Service says.

  8. Man dies after jumping in canalpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

    A man has died in Burton-on-Trent after jumping into a canal, says Staffordshire Police which has warned people not to cool off in open water.

    Officers, who were called to the canal in Waterside Road around 22:00 yesterday, say the 46-year-old got into difficulty. He was pulled from the water and received treatment from paramedics before being transferred to hospital where he died.

    Ch Insp Steve Maskrey said: "Tragically, this incident proves just how dangerous open water can be. Although it may seem fun at the time, the public need to be aware that swimming in open water brings many dangers including the risk of drowning, catching diseases and hypothermia to name just a few.

    "Therefore, my message is very clear - stay away from any open water including canals, rivers and lakes and always use a supervised swimming pool instead as the water is clean, clear and warm and there are lifeguards on hand if something goes wrong."

    There's a handy tool on the BBC News website which allows you to see how the temperature where you are compares with more than 50 cities worldwide.

    It's currently 28C (82F) in Hanley and Crewe, which tops Athens, Istanbul and Lagos.

    The temperature is set to reach 31C (88F) this afternoon in Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe.

  11. Two arrested after attempted store break-inpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

    Two men, aged 28 and 35, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary in connection with a failed break-in at the Co-op store in Sussex Place, Longton, just before 03:00.

    Would-be intruders tried the back fire door but could not gain entry.

    An elderly man from Stone is in a serious but stable condition in hospital following a crash involving two cars on the A34. 

    It happened at around 14:40 yesterday near to Aston roundabout and involved a Rover and a Porsche.

    I've been out to a Staffordshire wildlife centre where animals are being given ice lollies to keep them cool during this week's heatwave. 

    Monkeys and wolves at Gentleshaw, near Eccleshall, Stafford, have been enjoying frozen grape, apple and pear treats.

    Jenny Morgan, managing director at the centre, introduced me to Brian the monkey, who had a novel way of consuming the snacks.

    A family of peregrines in the Staffordshire Moorlands will soon be spreading their wings and flapping off to pastures new.

    I've been following their story since the birds set up nest on Hen Cloud, near the Leek and Tittesworth Reservoir.

    Ian Kynaston, from the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, says they'll still be around for a few more days as young birds get confident enough to fly.

  20. Stoke family urges NHS to fund bone marrow treatmentpublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

    On Morgan in the Morning today we heard from a Stoke-on-Trent family urging the NHS to fund a treatment that saved the life of their daughter.

    Pheobe Oldfield had two Bone Marrow Transplants five years ago - the first one failed. Her older sister died from the same illness.

    But now NHS England says it's only paying for one per patient this year because of high costs and a low clinical benefit.

    Pheobe's Dad, Adrian, said he was angered by the decision. "How would you feel if you were told 'sorry your child's not financially viable'?"
