  1. Fire service frees hedgehog after dog attackpublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 16 August 2016

    The fire service was called to force apart a fence in which a hedgehog was stuck - a trap that had led the animal to suffer a "gaping wound" at the paws of a dog.

    The RSPCA says, external it happened earlier this month on Orme Road, Newcastle-under-Lyme. The hedgehog is now being cared for at the Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre near Nantwich.

    The charity says it hopes the hedgehog will make a full recovery and be returned to the wild.

    Bournemouth have signed Republic of Ireland international Marc Wilson from Stoke City on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee reported to be £2m, external.

    Wilson, who can play in defence or midfield, had two loan spells with the Cherries in 2007.

    The 28-year-old spent six seasons at Stoke, making more than 150 appearances, and has been capped 24 times by his country.

    He missed out on the Republic's Euro 2016 squad with a knee injury.

    A Staffordshire campaigner has welcomed an inquiry launched by MPs, external that will examine "shared space" schemes in town centres such as Leek and Hanley. 

    The Women and Equalities Select Committee says it will look into what it calls our "built environment" to see that homes, town centres and public buildings are accessible for all. 

    Shared spaces try to make drivers take more care by removing traffic signs, pedestrian crossings and even kerbs.

    Leek woman Sarah Gayton has campaigned for several years , externalfor shared space schemes to be scrapped, saying they are "no-go areas" for people with disabilities.

    The Department for Transport has previously said if local authorities want to introduce such schemes they must "take into account the needs of the whole community, particularly disabled people".

    Owners of a Bengal cat who went missing four years ago had to fight to reclaim him despite microchipping their pet. 

    Tigger was reported missing in 2012 from his home in Drayton Bassett, Staffordshire, and recently his owner received a letter from Petlog requesting a change of ownership.

    The company, which microchips pets, said disclosing Tigger's location would breach data protection. 

    Petlog added that microchipping a cat is not proof of ownership.
