  3. Football: Low turnouts for Port Vale and Crewe in Checkatrade Trophypublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 31 August 2016

    Port Vale were watched by their lowest crowd in a competitive game for 30 years in last night's Checkatrade Trophy win over Derby County's Under-23s. 

    Just 1,198 fans turned out to watch the game in which defender Nathan Smith's goal saw Vale win 1-0 - 120 of the supporters were from the visitors.

    Meanwhile it was also a low turnout for Crewe Alexandra's match - Accrington attracting 585 fans for the game. 

    The Alex won the group game 3-0 with goals from Callum Ainley, George Cooper and Daniel Udoh.

    Derby County goalkeeper Lee Grant looks set for a surprise move to Premier League Stoke City.

    The 33-year-old is second choice behind Scott Carson and only made a handful of appearances last season, but has been pictured at Stoke's training ground this morning.

    Grant had been due to play for Derby's under-23 side at Port Vale in the Checkatrade Trophy last night before withdrawing late on.

    Stoke City are in talks with Manchester City striker Wilfried Bony over a proposed move to the Potteries.

    No deal has been done, but Bony, 27, does not figure in manager Pep Guardiola’s first-team plans and has been told he can find a new club. 

    Bony cost City £25m in 2015, when he joined on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

    A fundraising page set up to help the family of a Cheshire man, who died after trying to save a backpacker in a stabbing in Australia, has so far raised more than £10,000.

    Tom Jackson from Congleton was critically injured as he tried to save Mia Ayliffe Chung, who was killed at a hostel in Queensland last week.

    Police described his actions as "selfless".  

    Mr Jackson's father Les said: "We are bereft. Our darling Tom has left us and the world is a poorer place."  

    A statement on the fundraising page says all funds will go to Tom's parents "during this devastating time".

    The Potters have made no secret of their desire to buy Siado Berahino from West Brom while Wilfried Bony has been suggested as a back-up option from Manchester City. 

    Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho has already turned down loan moves to Stoke but, as the end of the window looms, a revival of the offer before the deadline cannot be ruled out

    A hospital that cares for children with mental health issues has been placed under special measures by a watchdog.

    Huntercombe Hospital in Stafford was criticised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after inspectors identified several serious failings.

    A whistleblower prompted an inspection at the hospital, which cares for 39 children.

    Inspectors highlighted over-use of restraint; insufficient staff numbers in key areas; and issues around staff training and medication doses.  

    The hospital said it was working to improve, and to address the concerns.
