    Plans have been submitted to build two apartment blocks near the centre of Leek, external.

    The application, by a company called Marcus Machines and Tools, based in Longton, details housing for 27 apartments on land on High Street.

    The land used to house a garage but has been derelict since 2003.

    It seems Saido Berahino won’t be leaving West Brom today.

    Stoke had been interested in the England Under-21 striker.

    But Berahino wanted to move at the start of pre-season, when West Brom weren’t willing to sell.

    And as the transfer window has dragged on, it has appeared increasingly likely Berahino would remain at the Hawthorns.

    As I understand it, that is exactly what will happen.

    A staff member at a Stafford hospital that has been placed under special measures, did not intervene when a child repeatedly banged their head against a wall, inspectors said. 

    The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has criticised Huntercombe Hospital after carrying out inspections in April and May.

    Inspectors highlighted over-use of restraint, insufficient staff numbers in key areas and issues around staff training and medication doses.

    A spokesman for The Huntercombe Group said: "The inspectors' verbal feedback acknowledged that improvements had been made. 

    "We deeply regret that some aspects of the service had fallen below the high standards that we are committed to provide. 

    "We are confident that the centre has been turned around by the strengthened management team and it has made good progress towards returning to the standards that we expect of it."

    Three fire crews are at the scene of a blaze in a wood pellet compacting machine , externalin Staffordshire. 

    Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service say it's at Elford Biofuels on Watling Street, Ivetsey Bank. 

    They say they were called at 13:37 and found the machine was "well alight" - two more crews have been called to help them.

    The Stoke City manager Mark Hughes says it was a "no brainer" to sign Wilfried Bony on loan from Manchester City for the season. 

    Speaking to the club's website he said the striker, external knows the league well and "has scored plenty of goals at this level".

    "He has power, speed and very good physical attributes which will undoubtedly help us, and his technical and finishing skills are outstanding too," Hughes added.

    He also said that Stoke had today signed goalkeeper Lee Grant on loan as, external "we felt it was important to make sure that we are well covered in that area".

    A Cheshire backpacker who died a week after being stabbed trying to save a fellow traveller in Australia has been nominated for a posthumous bravery award, external

    Thomas Jackson, 30, from Congleton, was hurt as he tried to shield Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21, in the attack at a hostel in Queensland last week.

    The Australian state's Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she was so moved by his efforts that she has nominated him for a bravery award. 

    She wrote on Twitter: "Tom Jackson's actions of putting his own life before the life of Ms Ayliffe-Chung is an extraordinary act of courage and deserves recognition."

  13. Man behind two train sex attacks wanted by policepublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 31 August 2016

    A man sexually assaulted two women on a train between Shrewsbury and Crewe, external, and left one of them "cowering in the corner", police say. 

    British Transport Police say the attacks happened on the 12:51 Arriva Train Wales service on 7 August - they've released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to in connection with the incidents, who may have vital information.

    They say the first victim was sitting next to a man when he lunged at her and grabbed her twice. 

    Officers say he touched the chest of the second as she passed through the carriage.

    The Staffordshire strongman Eddie Hall says it was "pretty special" to win the UK's Strongest Man contest for the sixth year, external in a row.

  15. Four hurt as camper van hits house in crashpublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 31 August 2016

    Two people have been seriously hurt in a crash involving a camper van in Staffordshire, external which ended with the vehicle hitting the side of a house. 

    West Midlands Ambulance Service say the two-vehicle collision happened last night outside the Green Man pub on the A523 in Ipstones.

    The service say four people needed treatment in total - two in the camper van were more seriously hurt and one, a woman in her 30s, had to be airlifted to hospital. 

    Paramedics say the other two in the car, which had "significant front end damage", suffered minor injuries.
