    The government has called a meeting with the police and the Football Association in the wake of allegations that junior players were sexually abused at professional clubs. 

    It says it is writing to all sports governing bodies telling them to improve efforts to protect children.

    The culture secretary and Staffordshire Moorlands MP, Karen Bradley, has been speaking in the Commons.

    National League side Chester have appointed former Stoke and Scotland international striker Chris Iwelumo as assistant to manager Jon McCarthy.

    Iwelumo scored once in 10 games for Chester before retiring after a career which saw him play for 19 different clubs, including Stoke City, Wolves, Colchester, Burnley and Watford.

    Bentley has revealed it would like to permanently close off Pyms Lane outside its Crewe headquarters. It's part of huge expansion plans.

    Three years ago Bentley's parent company, Volkswagen, promised its future to Crewe, meaning a huge expansion of the site. 

    The firm says a new link-road should be built to the north of the site. Land it wants to take over includes the nearby council recycling centre and the CHK Engineering premises.

    Bentley says this would be a £40m investment, housing over a thousand engineers. It also wants to open a museum in its new complex.

    More than 150 phone boxes in the Black Country and Staffordshire could be scrapped – including dozens of the iconic red landmarks.

    BT Group has begun a 90-day consultation period, external, which is due to end in January, to determine which of the 171 phone boxes may be taken out of use.

    A judge at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court has jailed a man for six years for sex offences , externalagainst two girls.

    Dean Goodwin, 27, of Lennox Road, Goms Mill was given the sentence after pleading guilty to eight counts of sexual activity with a child and two of child abduction.

    The former Crewe Player, Andy Woodward, has told BBC Radio Stoke that it takes "real men" to speak out against abuse in football. 

    It comes after the former darts world champion, Eric Bristow, suggested footballers who'd been victims of child abuse were not "proper men."

    Olympic swimming champion Adam Peaty has been announced as one of the nominees for the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

    It is the third time Peaty, from Uttoxeter, has been nominated.

    Sky have dropped Eric Bristow as a contributor following comments he made about child sex abuse on social media

    The 59-year-old, who lives in Leek, questioned on Twitter why victims did not "sort out" their abusers "when they got older and fitter."

    He suggested football abuse victims are not "proper men" - and added darts players were "tough guys" and footballers were "wimps."

    Barry Bennell, the former Crewe Alexandra football coach at the centre of a sex abuse scandal, is still in hospital after being discovered unconscious. 

    The 62-year-old convicted sex offender was named last week by several former footballers who allege he abused them when they were children. 

    Five police forces are now investigating claims of historical abuse.

    Eric Bristow, the former darts world champion, who now lives in Leek, has suggested football abuse victims are not "proper men".

    The 59-year-old questioned on Twitter why victims did not "sort out" their abusers "when they got older and fitter". Bristow, who was made an MBE in 1989, said darts players were "tough guys" and footballers were "wimps". 

    He added the victims should not be able to look themselves in the mirror for not "getting their own back" on their abusers in adulthood.

    Last night the 16 contenders for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year award were revealed.

    Two Midlands Olympic gold medallists have made it onto the shortlist, including Warwickshire showjumper Nick Skelton - nominated after winning individual gold at the age of 58. 

    Staffordshire's Adam Peaty is on the list after becoming Britain's first male swimming gold medalist in 28 years.
