    A book of condolence has been opened at Staffordshire University to mark the passing of Joshua Smith, whose body was found earlier this month

    The 27-year-old had been reported missing from Stone for several weeks.

    The university says he was a "popular young man", well known to many there after working with them, and add that many staff and students helped in searches for him. 

    Joshua Smith's family said they will have a private woodland burial, external for him this weekend.

    Ambulance services covering Staffordshire and Cheshire lost thousands of hours to queuing outside hospitals last year, a BBC investigation has found.

    Freedom of information requests showed almost 125,000 hours of ambulance crews' time in the North West and West Midlands in 2015-16 was lost queuing for more than the 15-minute target at A&E, waiting for hospital staff to hand over their patients to. 

    Ambulance bosses are blaming rising demand and pressure in the system.

    But in Staffordshire, the figures show there were decreases from 2013 - 2016 in the hours spent waiting at A&Es in Burton, Stafford and at the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

    The police officer who was seriously hurt after being hit by a car near Lichfield is in a stable condition in hospital. , external

    Staffordshire Police say the 39-year-old, who's based in Tamworth, was taken to Heartlands Hospital with leg and chest injuries after the collision last night. 

    The officer had stepped into the road on the A5 after a man threatened him with a tree branch following the stopping of a "suspicious" lorry. 

    The force say they've found that the HGV involved was stolen and was on cloned numberplates.

  10. Police chief calls tree branch threat at officer 'cowardly'published at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    The chief constable of Staffordshire Police has called an assault on one of the force's police officers, external a "cowardly attack". 

    The force says the officer was attacked with a tree branch on the A5 near Lichfield yesterday after stopping a "suspicious" lorry.

    He then stepped into the road and was hit by a car, suffering serious leg and chest injuries. The suspect escaped after carjacking a Ford Fiesta.  

    The force's chief constable, Jane Sawyers, tweeted her comments on the incident, adding that it was also "fantastic" to get comments of support from the public.

    Thousands of what are thought to be fake cigarettes have been found in a raid by trading standards officers on a Staffordshire, external shop, the council say.

    The county council say 17,120 of the cigarettes and 10.35kg of fake hand rolling tobacco were discovered at the store in Rugeley town centre on Friday. 

    They say they were found using tobacco detection dogs who uncovered hidden compartments in a store room.

    The Stoke City defender Erik Pieters says Bruno Martins Indi can go on to become one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

    Martins Indi is currently on a season-long loan from FC Porto and Pieters says he knew the defender would make a big impact.

    Ex-darts world champion Eric Bristow has apologised for suggesting football sex abuse victims are not "proper men".

    The 59-year-old, who lives in Leek, had suggested on Twitter that darts players were "tough guys" and footballers "wimps".

    In a heated interview with host Piers Morgan on ITV's Good Morning Britain, Bristow initially defended his tweets, saying he was trying to encourage children to report abuse immediately.

    He later accepted he had offended people and said: "I am sorry for that."

    Bristow added: "I apologise, it was mis-worded. They are not wimps."

    The leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council has defended proposals to increase council tax by 3% , externalby saying it's the "right thing to do".

    Under the authority's plans, which were unveiled yesterday, the rise would mean a Band A property paying an extra £24 - the money raised would be used to pay for social care for adults and children.

    202 jobs are set to be lost and 69 vacancies not filled but council leaders say they're also recruiting 230 carers to look after people in their own homes. 

    Labour opposition councillors in Stoke-on-Trent say the budget is an attack on the vulnerable, but council leader Dave Conway says it is a budget aimed at protecting those at risk.

    Nine police forces, including Cheshire and Staffordshire, are now looking into allegations of historical child sex abuse in football. 

    The forces say there have been 250 reports made to them and Dorset Police is the latest force to announce it is investigating.

    More than 20 former players have now spoken out about alleged abuse.

    In addition, a hotline set up last week by children's welfare charity the NSPCC received more than 50 calls in its first two hours.  

    Ministers are writing to all national sporting bodies to ask them to "redouble their efforts" to protect children in the wake of the scandal.
