    Tonight on Midlands Today - a Staffordshire police officer is to undergo surgery after he suffered potentially life-changing injuries while chasing a suspect.

    He'd been trying to defend himself from the driver of a stolen lorry when he was hit on the roadside by a oncoming car.

    A 17-year-old from Leicestershire has been arrested after an elderly Stafford woman had her arm broken during an attempted, external burglary police say. 

    Staffordshire Police say three people, who claimed they were roofing contractors, called at the Cresswell Grove house on Monday afternoon.

    Two of them tried to get on the roof while the third kept the householder talking but, when she became suspicious, they left. 

    Officers say as they left, the woman was knocked to the ground and suffered a broken arm.

  7. PC hit by car: Images released of 'vehicles involved'published at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    Images have been released of two vehicles which police say were involved in an incident which led to a policeman being hit by a car. 

    According to Staffordshire Police, a "suspicious" lorry was pulled over on the A5 between Wall Island and Weeford Island and the driver got out and ran off.

    They say he was chased by their officer who was then attacked with a tree branch, leading to the officer stepping into the road and being hit by a car. 

    The second image is of a Ford Fiesta which the force say the suspect escaped in after carjacking it - it was later found abandoned.

    More than 400 companies have backed calls for improvements to rail services including electrifying the line from Crewe to north Wales.

    Campaigners say faster, more frequent trains would bring 70,000 new jobs to north Wales in the next 20 years.

    Businesses representing 300,000 people from Cheshire, Mersey Dee and north Wales have backed the Growth Track 360 campaign, external

    The campaign says the electrification of the line from Crewe would link the region to HS2.

    The A53 Ball Haye Street in Leek is blocked in both directions between the junctions of the A523 Buxton Road and the A523 Ashbourne Road.

    It's because of an abnormal load and congestion is back to the Barnfield Road junction and, on the A523 Mill Street, to the Abbey Green Road junction.

    The new owner of the former university campus at Beaconside in Stafford has been named. 

    Until today, the buyer of the land was identified only as "an anonymous Chinese investor".

    A Stoke-on-Trent man has admitted sending money to a nephew fighting in Syria, but denies knowing he was with an al Qaida group. 

    Former probation worker,Syed Hoque, 37, told jurors at the Old Bailey he handed over £3,000 via a co-defendant, who was a full time aid-worker travelling to and from the country.

    Mr Hoque and three other men deny funding terrorism through aid convoys to Syria. 

    The trial continues.

  14. Appeal for witnesses after police officer seriously injuredpublished at 16:12 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    Police are appealing for witnesses after an officer was left with serious injuries following an attempt to stop a suspicious HGV in Tamworth.

    The driver of the HGV got out after a chase along the A5 near Lichfield yesterday evening and confronted and threatened the officer with a tree branch. 

    The injuries happened when he stepped back to avoid it and was hit by another vehicle.

    The officer is in hospital with serious leg and chest injuries and is said to be a stable condition.

    After the officer was struck, the lorry driver made off in stolen car which was later found abandoned in Pelsall, Walsall.

    The suspect is described as slim, white and about 6ft tall (1.8m). He wore dark clothing.
