GPs in north Staffordshire on the verge of retirement are going to be encouraged to stay on to help with a shortfall in numbers.
The area is one of 11 piloting a £1m scheme over the next 12 months which will see experienced doctors asked to join a pool to cover vacancies, sickness and holidays.
The number of GPs in Stoke-on-Trent and north Staffordshire has dropped by 18 since last year and a survey suggests in the next two years 26 out of 101 are planning to retire or cut their hours.

Cash has been stolen from the till of a Premier shop in Stoke-on-Trent after a man used a paving slab to smash glass in the door.
Police say he climbed into the store on Silverstone Crescent, Chell just after 06:00 this morning and although there were staff inside they escaped injury.

There are ten candidates vying to be the next MP, external representing Stoke-on-Trent Central.
The 17:00 deadline has now been passed which means no-one else can step forward to fill the vacant seat left when Tristram Hunt stepped down to become the director of the V&A Museum in London.
The by-election will take place on Thursday 23 February.

A Stoke-on-Trent MP is one of 73 calling for the US president to be banned from addressing parliament if his state visit to Britain goes ahead.
Labour's Rob Flello (pictured below) has signed a motion tabled in the Commons saying such an invitation is an "honour" that has historical significance, and parliament's authorities should "withhold permission".

A Staffordshire carer says the UK's fostering system is under "unsustainable strain".
Libby Thornhill, who is also president of the the Fostering Network, says the system is being held together by the goodwill and commitment of thousands of dedicated foster carers.
The charity's annual State of the Nation's Foster Care report, external says more than half of carers claim the money they are paid doesn't cover the full cost of looking after children.

There's a warning of high winds across Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire on Friday.
The Met Office says, external there could be gusts of 60 to 70 mph in places.
It warns of possible damage to trees, power lines and buildings and delays on the roads.
It's a case of Mini mania at the Staffordshire County Showground as thousands of motor enthusiasts, external descended on Bingley Hall.
A team from the University of Warwick will meet the Keele Squirrels in Rugeley as 32 teams vie to win the British Quidditch Cup in March.
The sport's governing body Quidditch UK says the sport, conjured up on the pages of Harry Potter, is valued for being "highly inclusive of athletic minorities... including women and the LGBTQ+ community".

A public inquiry into plans to build 900 homes on a former golf course near Crewe begins today.
Developers want to build the houses on Gorstyhill Golf Course at Wychwood village.
Campaigners say the land is legally protected from any further development.
A final decision will be made by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Sajid Javid.
