The NHS trust that runs two of Staffordshire's main hospitals has told the BBC its beds have been more than 98% full for the past two months.

To minimise the risk of infections and delays in getting treatment, hospitals are meant to have no more than 85% of beds occupied.

Across England, BBC analysis has found the number of patients on hospital wards in England has been at unsafe levels at nine in 10 NHS trusts this winter.

The figures for County Hospital, Stafford and the Royal Stoke University Hospital show in December and January they had 848 bed days available out of a total of 49,201 for the two months.

NHS bosses said hospitals had major problems discharging frail patients.

They said a lack of care in the community meant they were having to keep patients on wards.
