"Appropriate" action will be taken after concerns were raised about bullying at the authority, Cheshire East Council says.
There are allegations a senior official was asked to "dig the dirt" on a colleague.
Andrew North is Cheshire East Council's internal auditor, responsible for making sure the council isn't breaking rules and is managing public money properly.
Late last year a meeting of councillors heard that an unnamed member of staff asked a senior official to "dig the dirt" on him.
The council now says it's asked for more details about the allegation and the evidence for it.
It says it takes allegations of bullying very seriously, and will take "whatever action is appropriate".
