    HS2 is a great opportunity for the economy in Crewe, according to the town's MP.

    Labour's Laura Smith was speaking to me about the plans to expand and refurbish Crewe station and make it a high-speed hub on the HS2 line.

    Up to 14 trains per hour could stop at Crewe’s new high-speed rail hub station, under a government consultation that's just been launched.

    Some trains to and from Crewe could also call at Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford.

    Just after midnight they are expected to turn into scattered thunderstorms, with intense downpours affecting the whole region.

    In both cases the Met Office says there is a chance of localised flooding.

    A children's helpline charity says there's been a rise in calls from people in Staffordshire worried about children left home alone.

    The NSPCC say that means the number of calls they pass on to police and children's services has gone up.

    Sixty-three referrals were made in the county this year, that's up from 50 in the previous year.

    A Leek man has been fined after being found guilty of causing suffering to three donkeys and failing to meet the needs of seven others.

    The RSPCA says the animals are now being cared for by the Donkey Sanctuary, external - after the 82-year-old failed to trim their overgrown hooves - leaving three in pain.

    Newcastle borough councillors are meeting tonight to decide what's next after the closure of Kidsgrove Leisure Centre.

    The centre closed at the end of June because Staffordshire County Council, which owns it, says it's no longer fit for purpose.

    Port Vale have made their 11th signing of the closed season with the arrival of Burton Albion winger Marcus Harness on a season-long loan.

    As part of the deal, Burton will have the option of a recall in January 2018.

  13. Man charged with manslaughter and arson following hospital firepublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    A man's has been charged with manslaughter and two counts of arson following a fire at the Royal Stoke hospital.

    Thomas Ashcroft, 39, is accused of setting a fire at the hospital following which an 89-year-old woman, May Maxfield, died.

    The fire at the hospital led to the evacuation of hundreds of patients and the declaration of a major incident.

    He's also charged with setting fire to a building at Staffordshire University on the same day, 7 June.

    Mr Ashcroft, of Musgrave Crescent, Shirecliffe, Sheffield, has been remanded in custody until his next appearance.

    A revamp of Crewe's railway station is being proposed to accomodate HS2.

    The high speed rail service is due to arrive in a decade's time, and the government has launched a consultation, external on the local plans.

    Money for the Crewe work is yet to be confirmed - the government says decisions on investment will come at some point this year.

    Crewe was selected as an HS2 station over Stoke-on-Trent.

    The Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant has warned of "devastation" after details of the HS2 route north of Birmingham were revealed.

    The Department for Transport said the full line would connect Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and the East Midlands in a Y-shaped network, with all of them being linked to London.
