    Four people living in a Stoke-on-Trent tower block have been threatened with legal action because they won't let the city council change their front door.

    Officials say the doors at Sothern Court in Penkhull need to be replaced because the new doors would last ten minutes longer in a fire.

    The council says it has contacted the tenants who have not allowed the council to fit appropriate doors to their properties, to discuss the replacements it will be installing.

    It says it is in the interests of all tenants that "this work happens swiftly".

    The BBC has learned that since 2014, councils across the West Midlands have spent more than £900,000 on legal costs and clean-up operations associated with travellers' illegal camps.

    Local authorities are trying to preserve public spaces while traveller groups are demanding they do more to provide permanent pitches.

    The final HS2 routes beyond Birmingham have been revealed for the Manchester and Leeds arms of the project.

    The routes, from Crewe to Manchester and from the West Midlands to Leeds, were laid out last November, external.

    Earlier, the government announced seven contracts worth nearly £7bn for engineering works between Birmingham and London.

    Two polar guides have become the first couple to be officially married in British Antarctic Territory (BAT).

    Tom Sylvester, from Sheffield, and Julie Baum, from Yoxall, Staffordshire tied the knot at the Rothera Research Station on Adelaide Island to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula.

    The couple have been together for 11 years and are experienced instructors who were picked for the British Antarctic Survey last year.

    Ms Baum, with help from friends at the site, made her own wedding dress which included part of an old orange tent for the skirt.

    People in Kidsgrove are being asked what kind of sports facilities they'd like in the short term, following the closure of the town's sports centre.

    It shut last month , externalwith Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council saying it couldn't afford to run the county council-owned site.

    The two councils say they are working together on long term plans for leisure, health and well-being for Kidsgrove but say they want ideas in the interim to fill the gap.

  12. Final HS2 plans revealed for Crewepublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 17 July 2017

    Proposals to build a rolling stock depot for high speed HS2 trains near the village of Wimboldsley between Crewe and Middlewich, external are being backed by the government.

    It's among the details announced as ministers confirmed their new HS2 rail links , externalwith the route between Birmingham and Manchester, via Crewe, set out.

    The government also confirmed it is backing the idea of a high speed "hub" station for Crewe but it would be in the existing railway station.

    Its report says says HS2 trains could stop between Birmingham and Manchester - previously they would have gone straight through Crewe.

    However the money for the work in Crewe is yet to be confirmed, with the report saying decisions on additional investment in the town will be taken in 2017, external.

    A family have rebuilt a memorial garden in Staffordshire after it was "smashed to smithereens" by vandals.

    In 2011, Mike Sutton died after a prank went wrong and he fell into the Trent and Mersey Canal in Kidsgrove.

    At the site a memorial garden was erected by his family but, last week, they say they found it'd all been ripped up and vandalised.

    His father, Anthony Sutton, says it left them devastated and they spent the weekend putting up a new one.

    The Director of Legal Services at Cheshire East Council has been suspended.

    It's amid an investigation over the conduct of the council's three most senior managers.

    The chief executive was suspended in April while the chief operating officer has had some duties taken away.

    The council says the suspensions are a neutral act and won't comment on the nature of the concerns. An investigation led by councillors is under way.

    Staffordshire and Cheshire are among the worst places in the country for the illegal trade of puppies, according , externalto the RSPCA.

    The charity says it fears soaring demand for fashionable breeds like pugs, chihuahuas and Yorkshire terriers could be fuelling demand in the trade.

    It's released a top 10 "hotspots" based on the number of calls they've had about questionable dealers in 2016.

    The former Stoke City defender Mike Pejic says he believes it was fate that led him to marry his childhood sweetheart after more than 50 years apart.

    He dated Mal Burgess at school but she moved to London in 1965 and it wasn't until two years ago that they met again.

    On leap year last year, Mal proposed to Mike and they tied the knot earlier this year, saying they'd met their "soul mates".
