  2. International Cheese Awards sees increase in entriespublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

    The number of entries for this year's International Cheese Awards in Nantwich are up 13% on last year, the organisers have said.

    There are 5,685 cheeses vying for awards, and the entries have come from more than 30 countries, including the United States, Canada and New Zealand.

    Last year Gert van Leeuwen from Treur Kaas in the Netherlands won the Supreme Champion award for his aged cheese made from Jersey cow milk.

    Bradbury's Cheese, external from Buxton in Derbyshire have been crowned the Supreme Champions at this year's International Cheese Awards in Nantwich.

    Waitrose walked away with the Supreme Retailer prize.

    And it looks like they've been eating well - they tweeted these photos earlier.

  4. Cheese festival a 'family event'published at 15:31 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

    The supreme judge at this year's International Cheese Awards in Nantwich says the event brings the whole industry together.

    There are over 5,000 representatives from cheese makers and retailers at Dorfield Park today and David Williams said "everybody is here, you just bump into friends".

    Mr Williams said the show was a big event in the cheese-making year and the place where producers can tie up big deals with supermarkets and other retailers.

    He is the fourth generation of judges at the show and this year his son is a judge too.

    The former Port Vale striker Ray Williams says he thinks Tom Pope (pictured) and Tyrone Barnett have what it takes to make the club serious promotion contenders this season.

    Both strikers have been signed by manager Michael Brown this summer with Pope joining from Bury and Barnett from AFC Wimbledon.

  7. Jury out in 'Three Musketeers' terror trialpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

    The jury trying four men in an alleged terror cell accused of plotting a Lee Rigby-style attack has been sent out to begin deliberations.

    The group - known as The Three Musketeers - was arrested last summer following an undercover operation by police and MI5.

    Naweed Ali, 29, and Khobaib Hussain, 25 - both of Sparkhill in Birmingham - deny preparing terrorist acts, as do Stoke-on-Trent men Mohibur Rahman, 33, and Tahir Aziz, 38.

    The Old Bailey has heard how a stash of weapons and ammunition, including a partially-built pipe bomb and a meat cleaver, was found in Mr Ali's car in Birmingham on August 26 last year.

    But the defendants claim the items - found in a JD Sports bag - were planted by corrupt undercover officers.

    A juror was discharged last week after it emerged she had tried to play matchmaker for another woman on the jury who found a police officer in the case attractive. He had been criticised during the trial by the defence team.

    Staffordshire Police says a 16-year-old boy was attacked yesterday afternoon and hit on his legs with metal objects on Sherratt Street.

    They say the two men, aged 43 and 22, arrested in connection with the assault have been released under investigation.

  10. Dial-a-ride services could be scrapped under bus subsidy planspublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

    Dial-a-ride bus services could be axed under a range of plans being considered in Staffordshire to save money. , external

    The county council says it wants public feedback on how it uses its £1.3m budget for subsidising bus travel in the county in the future.

    The money's used to help pay for journeys where not enough people use the service for it to pay for itself but the council says that can at times cost £10 per passenger on some journeys.

    The council's drawn up four options for how it uses the money in the future which include subsidising as many bus services as possible with no dial-a-ride services.

    However another option would see a county-wide network of dial-a-ride services with no other bus services being subsidised.

    Stoke-on-Trent long jumper Jazmin Sawyers will compete in next month's World Championships in London.

    British Athletics confirmed this morning that five athletes, external, including the 23-year-old, have been added to its team for the event.

    The organisation says Sawyers is a "championship performer" while the athlete tweeted that, external she "couldn't be happier" at the news.

  13. Cost of holiday childcare risen by 82% in the West Midlandspublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

    The cost of holiday childcare has risen by more than 82% across the West Midlands since 2010, Labour has said.

    Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner said the situation was made worse because incomes had fallen in real terms over the same period.

    Nationally there has been a rise of 50%, according to Ms Rayner.

    The Tories said Labour had "blundered" because the party was in charge of childcare in Wales, where they said rises had been double the national average.

  14. Campaign to fund treatment for cerebral palsy boy to walk unaidedpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

    The parents of a little boy from Stafford who has cerebral palsy have begun a fundraising campaign, external to help their son walk unaided.

    Henry Gibbs was diagnosed at the age of two and, without specialist treatment and follow-up physiotherapy, his parents say he'll eventually need a wheelchair.

    The treatment, known as selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR), costs around £50,000 but is not available on the NHS.

    NHS England says it doesn't routinely fund the treatment based on clinical advice because there isn't sufficient evidence of its effectiveness compared to other treatments available.

    A national memorial to evacuees during World War Two is due to be officially unveiled today in Staffordshire.

    The British Evacuees Association fundraised towards it and says it is in memory of evacuated children during the conflict and also to all those involved, external in the evacuation process.

    They say the memorial portrays a group of confused children "as they would have appeared on Evacuation day".

  16. Police plea on mystery man after Welsh connection ruled outpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 25 July 2017

    People are being urged to come forward if they have new information on an unidentified body found buried in a shallow grave 46 years ago in Burton.

    It's after detectives said it is not a missing man from Denbighshire, John Henry Jones, from Trevor, near Llangollen, who went missing in 1970.

    His family came forward after the reconstructed face of a man found buried in Staffordshire in 1971 was shown on the BBC's Crimewatch.

    But Det Insp Dan Ison, of Staffordshire Police, said DNA tests showed the man was not Mr Jones.

    However he said their investigation is still open and "we'd ask people to check the image and contact us if they have new information."

    Hansons Auctioneers says the 213-year-old truncheon was discovered by a child when a farm, near Lichfield, was demolished in the 1960s.

    The auctioneers have valued it at between two and three hundred pounds and say they expect the rare item, made in 1804, to draw worldwide attention.

    Uttoxeter swimmer Adam Peaty sliced more than three-tenths of a second off his own 50m breaststroke world record in the heats at the World Aquatics Championships on Tuesday.
