  6. Lowestoft man fails to overturn life sentencepublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 6 October 2016

    BBC Radio Suffolk

Lowestoft man Paul Downie, who stabbed his ex-partner's new boyfriend 15 years ago, has failed to overturn his life sentence.

Downie, 45, attacked Michael Best in April 2001, and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of four years and eight months.

He had pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was convicted of attempted murder and making threats to kill.

Mr Best suffered knife wounds in his leg and side in the attack.

A decade after the minimum tariff expired, Downie went to the Appeal Court to try and quash his life term and asked for a hospital order instead.

Lawyers said he had a "personality disorder" at the time and argued the decision to release him could be taken by a specialist tribunal rather than the parole board.

Lord Justice Treacy refused the appeal, saying the evidence that his condition was treatable was not strong enough.

He will only ever be freed if the parole board believes he poses no danger to the public.
