  3. Rural post office misery: What's been the effect in Orford?published at 12:24 British Summer Time 14 October 2016

    Vikki Irwin
    BBC Radio Suffolk political reporter

The phone line fault at the Orford Post Office and General Stores has affected the rural community, especially the elderly, it is claimed.

    Orford General Stores

Joyce Knights who lives in the village said: "Well you can't pay anything.

"Just about everything that they do at the post office, is just not useable, which is not good, more so for the elderly. It's a small village and you need a post office.

"If you haven't got a vehicle, then what? There's no buses."

    Vikki Irwin
    BBC Radio Suffolk political reporter

A rural post office in Suffolk hasn't been able to offer most of its services over the last month - because of a phone line fault.

BT has apologised to Orford Post Office - but it still means that there's no banking services in the village at all at the moment.

Orford Post office and general stores

Postmistress Sue Snowden said: "The post office is so crucial to the local community because it's not only for mail and parcels, but it's the source of the banking for paying money in and out, pensions and the nearest post office is a distance away, so it's absolutely crucial we get this back up and running."

  5. How Suffolk Police's Operation Converter intitiative worked in case of Gavin Dightonpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 14 October 2016

    Kate Williams
    BBC Local Live

Gavin Dighton, the 37-year-old drug-user from Felixstowe who stole from women in their 90s, admitted a string of offences after co-operating with Suffolk Police's Operation Converter team.

The intiative encourages offenders to admit their crimes, which police say gives other victims peace of mind that an offender has been caught.

In turn, the offender has the opportunity to wipe the slate clean, giving them a new start when are released from prison, without the possibility they will later be traced for a further crime.

The force says offenders have to give enough detail for officers to be sure they have committed the crime and these offences are then "taken into consideration" at sentencing.

Det Con Duncan Etchells said: "This case again demonstrates how one person can be responsible for a large number of offences.

"The sentence given today reflects both the number of crimes and the nature of the two most serious incidents, where women in the 90s were targeted.

"He has caused a huge amount of distress and misery to the individuals who were his victims and we’re pleased that he has been given a substantial jail term.”

Gavin Dighton admitted eight offences at Ipswich Crown Court including robbery, burglary and theft.

The crimes included a robbery in September in Felixstowe in which Dighton snatched the handbag belonging to a woman in her 90s as she tried to go into her home.

On another occasion in August, Dighton pushed over a woman in her 90s, leaving her bruised and shaken, and stole three handbags from her home.

Dighton, from Crown Street, also admitted possession of a class A drug, and he asked that a further 19 offences were taken into consideration.

Suffolk Police say following an appearance at magistrates' court, Dighton was remanded in custody and went on to co-operate with Suffolk Police’s "Operation Converter" team to admit the further offences.

The total value of items he stole is believed to have been just under £10,000.

Those two belts will be unified when Sam Sheedy faces Tommy Langford in Cardiff later this month.

Ogogo is currently preparing to face Craig Cunningham, in Birmingham a week on Saturday, for the International Middleweight crown.

"Whether the British Champion would agree to fight me in my own back yard is another thing," Ogogo said.

"But if he did it would be a homecoming of sorts. It's my job, therefore, to win this belt and give me something to fight for this December."

The proposed flood defences are to give it protection against a one-in-200-year flood. There will be improvements to River Alde bridge and banks to offer more protection.

The existing river banks were over-topped during tidal surges in December 2013 (pictured).

  16. Father of alleged hacker from Suffolk meets with MPs over casepublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Nic Rigby
    BBC News

We've been following the news that the father of Lauri Love, facing extradition after being accused of hacking US government computers, has welcomed the intervention of an MP at Prime Minister's Question Time.

    Lauri Love

Rev Alexander Love told the BBC that a number of MPs from the Conservative and Labour Party met with him this week to express concerns about a court decision to allow Mr Love's extradition to the USA.

Rev Love, of Stradishall, said: "We welcome the support of the MPs. They were such decent people.

"They are the politicians that frame the laws."

One of the MP Conservative David Burrowes raised his concerns at PMQs.

The MP, who represents Enfield Southgate, said: "When the Prime Minister introduced the forum bar (which allows courts to bar prosecutions abroad if it is in the interest of justice) to, in her words, provide greater safeguards for individuals, surely she expected it to protect the vulnerable?"

Mr Burrowes had fought to prevent the extradition of alleged hacker Gary McKinnon, who's decade-long fight against extradition to the US was eventually backed by Mrs May in 2012 when she was home secretary.

Rev Alexander Love's 31-year-old son Lauri is hoping to appeal against a British court's decision to allow his extradition.

Mr Love, from Stradishall near Haverhill, has previously said he feared he would die in a US prison if he was extradited.

Conservative MP for Enfield Southgate, David Burrowes - who successfully campaigned for another austistic man, Gary McKinnon, not to be extradited - raised Mr Love's case with the prime minister yesterday.

But Theresa May refused to say if she would intervene in Mr Love's case, insisting the power to block extradition now rightly lies with the courts.

Rev Love said: "The judge accepted he [Lauri] had mental health issues, but still said there was a public interest to honour the extradition to the US.

"If he has done something wrong surely he should be tried here in this country."

  18. Ipswich players should take the blame, not managerpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Graeme Mac
    BBC Radio Suffolk sport

Midfielder Jonathan Douglas has defended Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy in the wake of growing criticism of the boss from Town fans.

    Jonathan Douglas

There have been calls for the Yorkshireman to quit, as the Blues are winless in four matches.

"The fans have a right to have a go at us as players, because the manager works hard every day, and it is up to us to get the results," Douglas said.

"Before he came here the club was looking at League One and he turned it all around. Given the budget we've got, what he's done is remarkable."
