    A business has introduced a sign calling itself "the only British owned pound shop in Ipswich".

    The blackboard is outside The £ Shop on Westgate Street and has been the subject of two complaints by passersby, the BBC has been told.

    The business is near to an area that is heavily populated by European-run shops and restaurants.

    As we remember the late Capt Albert Pond who served with the British Army at Auschwitz concentration camp after its liberation, here's a chance to read the story of another Suffolk man who was a prisoner at Auschwitz and survived.

    Frank Bright, now 89 and living in Martlesham Heath near Ipswich, was a Jewish boy who grew up in Berlin and lost his family during the Holocaust.

    His story is in five parts.

    The photo-montage shows him with his father Hermann in Berlin in 1929, his UK visa application photograph from 1945 and a more recent photo of him at Martlesham Heath Control Tower Museum.

    BBC Radio Suffolk's Mark Murphy interviewed Albert Pond last year - the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.

    Capt Pond had been a tank driver in Africa, Italy and Austria and he was then posted to Auschwitz to help clean-up the camp alongside troops from the USSR, who had arrived there on 27 January 1945.

    A World War Two veteran, who witnessed first-hand the horrors of Auschwitz concentration camp, has died aged 93.

    Albert Pond, from Saxmundham, who served as a captian, spoke of the numerous harrowing sights following the 1945 liberation of the camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, where more than a million people were rounded up and killed.

    In an interview with BBC Radio Suffolk's Mark Murphy, Mr Pond spoke about how the ordeal changed him for ever.

    "I was a complete washed-up soldier," he said. "It sapped my strength, sapped my sense, sapped everything. 

    "I can honestly say it never leaves you. It haunts you."

    Mark Murphy said today: "Albert was the most incredible man. 

    "What he witnessed stayed with him his entire life, but now he is finally at peace. 

    "God bless you Albert. We will never forget you."

    A prisoner is on the run from Hollesley Bay open prison.

    Stuart Guildea, 39, was reported missing last night from the jail, which is on the Suffolk coast near Woodbridge. He's serving a 12-year sentence for robbery, theft and burglary.

    He is described as white, 5ft 8in tall, of medium build with blue eyes and mousy hair.

    He has links to the Luton area of Bedfordshire and the Rugby area of Warwickshire.

    Members of the public are advised not to approach Guildea, but should call police immediately.

    An incredible 20 goals were scored by two of the county's clubs in last night's local fixtures.

    Needham Market's reserves hammered Ipswich Athletic 11-0 in the Suffolk Senior Cup, while Woodbridge Town won 9-0 at Whitton United in the Thurlow Nunn First Division.

  12. Memorial ride for 10-year-old William Warren gets 'brilliant turnout'published at 16:57 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

    The memorial ride for 10-year-old William Warren, who died five years ago today, is raising money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

    William died a week after being hit by a car in Stowmarket back in 2011.

    Richard Collins, a family friend who organised the remembrance ride, said it had been a huge success. 

    Riders met at Beacon Hill, just off the A140, and went on to the bridge at Stowmarket, where the accident happened.

    He said: "It's gone absolutely brilliantly. William's dad was over the moon. We made lots of noise as we went over the bridge, as his dad had wanted, because we all know young boys like noise!

    "It was a brilliant turnout."

    A memorial ride is under way in Stowmarket for 10-year-old William Warren, who died after being hit by a car on Navigation Approach.

    The 10th St Edmundsbury Sports Awards took place at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds last night in celebration of clubs, coaches, teams and individuals from the west of the county.

    There were 12 categories including Sports Personality of the Year, Most Active Workplace and Lifetime Achievement - along with two public vote awards.

    Newmarket Joggers member Rhys Turnbull-Bester (pictured) won two awards on the night.

    The 16-year-old was named Young Sports Personality of the Year as well as People's Youth Champion.

    World Champion race walker Callum Wilkinson capped a terrific year by winning two prizes at last night's St Edmundsbury Sports Awards.

    The 19-year-old was named Sports Personality of the Year, and also triumphed in the Performance/Achievement of the Year category.

    As Callum is currently studying at university in Leeds, his brother George (pictured) collected both awards on his behalf.

  17. Police on missing Corrie Mckeague: Nothing can be ruled outpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

    Police searching for missing serviceman Corrie Mckeague say they are keeping an open mind as to what may have happened to him. 

    Suffolk Police says at this stage nothing can be ruled out and inquiries are continuing as to whether Mr Mckeague attempted to walk home, but his journey on 24 September was not captured on CCTV.

    The force also thinks he may have willingly gone with someone else, perhaps in a vehicle, or that something else may have happened.

    However, the force adds there is no evidence of criminality or anything to indicate any third party involvement, although this continues to be subject to the ongoing investigation. 

    Mr Mckeague, 23, who was dressed in a pink shirt and white jeans, is known to be friendly and outgoing and speaks with a distinctive Scottish accent.

  18. Searches continue for missing Corrie Mckeague on A134published at 15:44 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

    There's been more searching this morning for the missing airman Corrie Mckeague using a specially trained sniffer dog from the National Search and Rescue Dog Association.

    Mr Mckeague went missing in the early hours of 24 September after a night out with friends in Bury St Edmunds. 

    Today the search was on a section of the A134 road from Bury to Honington as it's thought he may have walked along it before he disappeared.
