Suffolk's councils will still meet as planned, even though it's expected the government will pull the plug on the deal for a devolved Suffolk and Norfolk body.

The deal would have seen a combined authority and a directly-elected mayor for the two counties. They would have had control over nearly a £1bn pounds of central government money over the next 30 years to spend on transport, infrastructure and housing.

    Suffolk County Council

Suffolk's county and district councils were due to vote and pass the deal over the next three days.

The meetings will go ahead, with councils expected to table an amendment that will allow council leaders to continue conversations with the government about a devolution deal for Suffolk and any other willing partners in councils in Norfolk or even Essex which still favour some form of devolution.

Mid Suffolk, St Edmundsbury and Suffolk Coastal meet tonight; Babergh and Forest Heath tomorrow; with Suffolk County Council, Waveney and Ipswich Borough voting on Wednesday.

  16. The latest on 'dead' devolution dealpublished at 10:06 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2016

    Vikki Irwin
    BBC Radio Suffolk political reporter

Councils across Suffolk and Norfolk are expecting a letter from the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, external, Sajid Javid, confirming the devolution deal is over.

It was widely reported on Friday that plans had been scrapped, following the latest rejection of the proposals by King's Lynn & West Norfolk District Council.

    Devolution papers

It's been very much an "on, off, on and off again" deal, but to sum it up, the original plan was for Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire to have a joint agreement, then Cambridgeshire decided they wanted to go it alone, and the other two neighbouring counties attempted a deal of their own.

The sticking point was the directly-elected mayor, which some of Norfolk's politicians didn't think we needed.

In June, four out of seven of Norfolk's district councils voted against the idea, which prompted a response from the government that the deal would be off if one more council backed out.

This is what happened last week, when West Norfolk & King's Lynn Borough Council voted against the proposals.

Suffolk County Council is planning to continue with its meetings, and hopes something can be salvaged from 18 months of negotiations.

  17. Suffolk-only devolution proposals back on the agenda?published at 09:45 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November 2016

Councils in Suffolk are hoping to salvage something from the Norfolk and Suffolk devolution deal which the government is likely to say is dead later on this morning.

    Colin Noble

Five of the seven councils in Norfolk rejected the plans, which would have included a new directly-elected mayor serving both counties.

Now MPs and councillors in Suffolk want to explore a one-county deal.

The Conservative leader of Suffolk County Council, external, Colin Noble, said: "There is a feeling that we would like to go ahead.

"We would like to put to the secretary of state a Suffolk-only deal, but it is not just Suffolk only - it is Suffolk-based.

"[For] other areas that can see the advantage of devolution, then we want to talk to those areas about how we would take a Suffolk-based devolution deal forward."

It is believed this idea could be of interest to councils in Norfolk which had voted to back the devolution proposals.
