    A couple were tied up at a house in Kersey, near Hadleigh, yesterday afternoon, after three raiders entered the property demanding money.

    A man was punched in the face and needed medical treatment, while a woman was uninjured but very shaken in the incident.

    The raiders searched the property before fleeing with a sum of cash.

    Police, who were called just before 17:40, searched the area but the suspects, are described as being white, and wearing dark hooded tops and either tracksuit bottoms or trousers, weren't found.

    One man was wearing grey and yellow trainers.

    Returning now to the brand new Sybil Andrews Academy, external in Bury St Edmunds, there are two dedicated school buildings: the blue one contains the library and all the specialist science labs, and the green one has additional classrooms.

    In addition, some of the £22m funding that Suffolk County Council, external has provided for the project, is being used to create a new sports facility, the third building on site, which will have dual-use and be available to the community as well.

    During the day the school will utilise the building, and after hours it'll be run by Abbeycroft Leisure, external, and St Edmundsbury Borough Council, external, which has contributed £1m and is due to discuss additional costs for a 3G pitch when full council meets in December.

    A man who has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murdering his wife is due to stand trial next year.

    Jean Ryan, 67, of Gosford Way in Felixstowe was stabbed to death on Wednesday, 13 April.

    Shaun Ryan, 62, of Gosford Way, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court today.

    He was remanded in custody.

    He trial is due to begin on 5 June.

    AFC Sudbury,, external who are already through, face a Ryman Premier Division clash at Billericay tonight.

    Bury Town, external are also in action, away at AFC Hornchurch in the Ryman One North.

    British Speedway Champion Danny King will captain a new-look Ipswich Witches side, external in the new-look Championship division from next season.

    The Suffolk side have retained the services of the 30-year-old, along with those of Argentine rider Nico Covatti, a fans' favourite at Foxhall.

    The inclusion of Rory Schlein on the seven-man roster has been hailed by the Witches as something of a marquee signing.

    Witches asset Cameron Heeps, former Plymouth skipper Kyle Newman, plus reserve riders Danyon Hume and Connor Mountain complete the line-up.

  6. Who was Sybil Andrews?published at 14:16 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    We've been telling you about the newest school in the county, which opened its doors to pupils at its brand new site in Bury St Edmunds yesterday.

    The Sybil Andrews Academy, external is named after a woman who was born in the town in 1898, in an apartment above a hardware store at the top of Abbeygate Street, which is now home to the Royal Bank of Scotland.

    According to her biography, external, she became fascinated with the life of St Edmund, and created an embroidered banner depicting his martyrdom by the Danes, which is understood to hang in the town's Cathedral.

    Sybil worked as a welder in an airplane factory during World War One, after which she was employed as an art teacher at Portland House School.

    She developed an interest in coloured linocuts, and created several depicting agricultural life in the area.

    In 1943 she married Walter Morgan. They moved to Canada in 1947, and she died in 1992.

    Suffolk's newest secondary school has opened its doors in Bury St Edmunds.

    Pupils at the Sybil Andrews Academy, external, on Rougham Tower Avenue, have been using the former St James Middle School premises in the town, as the new buildings weren't quite ready for its inception in September.

    But all that's changed, and principal Andy Prestoe says he's excited and very proud: "It's just a great opportunity; a great opportunity for me personally, but a fantastic opportunity for the pupils, and, I think, as well for Bury. 

    "It's a 21st Century school."

    While it's six months since images of Sylvia and Peter Stuart were recorded on CCTV at a farm shop in Pulham Market, it was in fact not until Friday, 3 June that the couple were reported missing from their Weybread home, with Mr Stuart's body being discovered close by that evening.

    Ali Qazimaj was arrested in Luxembourg on 17 June and brought back to Suffolk on 21 July, where he was charged with the murder of Mr and Mrs Stuart.

    His trial is due to start date on 7 February at Ipswich Crown Court

  12. Sylvia Stuart: Six months since last recorded sightingpublished at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    It's six months today since the last recorded sighting of Sylvia Stuart, who was reported missing from her home at Weybread, near Harleston, on Friday 3 June, along with her husband Peter.

    Mr Stuart's body was found close to their Mill Lane home at 19:15 on the same day.

    The couple were captured on CCTV at Goodies Farm Shop in Pulham Market on 29 May.

    Mrs Stuart's body has never been found.

    Ali Qazimaj, who was extradited from Luxembourg to face charges over the deaths of Mr and Mrs Stuart, has denied their murder.

    Temperatures in the East of England plummeted last night with the mercury falling below zero for many of us across the region. 

    BBC Look East weather man Dan Holley has been crunching the numbers. Santon Downham in Suffolk was the coldest at -6.4C (20F) while Cromer was a positively balmy 2.2C (36F).

    The draw for the FA Trophy was made yesterday afternoon with Suffolk's two remaining sides given tough fixtures. 

    Leiston, external, who have to beat Eastbourne Borough tomorrow night in a qualifying round replay, will travel to Bromley if they progress. 

    AFC Sudbury, external beat Kings Langley comfortably at the weekend to progress to the first round proper; they have a home tie against Gosport Borough. 

    Yellows manager Jamie Godbold was pleased with the draw and said: "We're just really excited to be there and be in it at this stage of the competition.”

    Army bomb disposal experts were called to Pakefield beach yesterday afternoon after some old ammunition was found.

    The Lowestoft and Southwold Coastguard, external Rescue team secured the site, at the bottom of an old rifle range, until an Army bomb disposal team arrived and made safe the clip of .303 ammunition, taking it away.

    The Coastguard has warned that more ammunition may fall out of the cliff in future.

    Fee Teng Liew made her debut for the Suffolk Saxons, external in the National Badminton League last night, helping Anthony Clark's team to a 3-2 win at Loughborough.

    The 17-year-old partnered Sean Vendy to success in the mixed doubles event, after Julie Finne-Ipsen had earlier won in the women's singles, before partnering Sarah Walker in the women's doubles.

    Teng Liew, who represented England in the U19 World Junior Championships last year, only joined the Saxons last week.

    She has won two titles at every English National Championship she has entered since she was 10 years old.

    Danish player Julie Finne-Ipsen (pictured) starred for the Suffolk Saxons, external last night as Anthony Clark's team enjoyed a 3-2 win at Loughborough in the National Badminton League.

    The 21-year-old scored the Saxons' first point on the night in the women's singles event, before partnering Sarah Walker in the doubles.

    Despite trailing 2-0, the pair came back to win their event before Sean Vendy and Fee Teng Liew won the deciding mixed doubles contest.

    The result leaves the Saxons second in the table, external, one point behind reigning champions Birmingham Lions.
