  1. What do we know about the Felixstowe Port explosion?published at 08:09 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2017

    As we reported a little earlier, a person has died following what police have described as an "incident in a boiler room" of a ship that was docking at the Port of Felixstowe overnight .

    A spokesman for the port said it was  "K" Line (Ipswich offices pictured) vessel, and that the incident happened as the ship was coming into the port.

    Paul Davey added: "It wasn't yet alongside the ports, so the incident didn't fall into the jurisdiction of the Port of Felixstowe."

    We understand the vessel on which the incident took place was the Manhattan Bridge which was arriving from Rotterdam.

    An investigation will be launched by the Police and the Maritime Coastguard Agency.

    At this stage, the Port of Felixstowe hasn't confirmed if it will launch its own investigation.

    We'll start the day with the news that a person has died following what's been described as an explosion at the Port of Felixstowe overnight.

    Police say they were called to the port at 23:45, following reports of an incident in the boiler room of a ship that was docking at the port.

    As a result of this, one person received fatal injuries, and another is receiving treatment in hospital.

    The death is not being treated as suspicious, and there will be a joint investigation between the police and the Maritime Coastguard Agency, external.

    We'll bring you more on this, and other stories from across the county, between now and 18:00.

    It's going to be a dry night, with a lot of clear sky. 

    A sharp frost will develop, with some mist and fog patches, and possibly ice in places.

    Winds will be light, with temperatures falling as low as -4C (25F) in some isolated places. In cloudier places, temperatures will stay closer to freezing.

    Any mist and fog may be slow to clear tomorrow, but it should then become a dry and sunny day.

    Mick McCarthy admits he is not entirely sure whether his Ipswich Town players are over Tuesday's loss to non-league Lincoln in the FA Cup.

    The manager has been preparing the squad for Saturday's Championship clash away at Huddersfield Town, with the team due to travel to West Yorkshire tomorrow. 

    "It was humbling, humiliating and embarrassing," McCarthy said. "Although Lincoln played well, we shouldn't be losing to them.

    "I don't know about individuals. You can go round and ask them and they'll tell you they're fine but I'm never certain about that. We'll see on Saturday."

    A former non-league footballer who had both his legs amputated after he was hit by a car in Newmarket last year admits he has some "bad days", but says he wants to "do normal things".

    Shaun Whiter, who's part of a team raising money for Prostate Cancer UK, the Friends of Ipswich Town Charity, and various other nominated organisations, via a cycle ride explained: "I want to get out there, doing normal things, doing bike rides, going out, going to the Newmarket Races, going out to watch football, going out to see my friends.

    "I don't want to be sitting indoors. 

    "Yes I got hit by a car and it's not nice but I need to build on that and need to move on and keep going."

  7. Amputee footballer raising money for charitypublished at 16:57 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    Shaun Whiter, who had both his legs amputated below the knee following a hit and run crash in Newmarket last year, is taking on a new challenge.

    The former non-league footballer will be part of a team, organised through Ipswich Town, cycling 150 miles around the county for charity, with a specially adapted hand-bike.

    He said: "It's going to be fun, it's going to be tiring but I want to raise money for the charities, and give back to Ipswich Town for the support they've given me."

    The brothers of missing RAF gunner Corrie Mckeague have said he was not depressed.

    Darroch and Makeyan Mckeague hosted a questions and answers session on Facebook Live, external last night.

    Their brother is missing after going out in Bury St Edmunds with friends from RAF Honington, where he was based.

    The airman was last seen in the town at 03:35 on 24 September.

    Darroch said: "He was not depressed. Almost 18 months before he went missing he was down after breaking up with his previous girlfriend.

    "He spoke to the gaffer at the RAF and they stop it before it gets worse, no matter how small it is.

    "The care they get is phenomenal and for Corrie it was picked up really quickly and he got fantastic support."

    Makeyan added: "He has moved on with his life and if something was wrong with Corrie, we would’ve been the first to know."

    The mother of missing airman Corrie Mckeague has spoken to the family of a Suffolk teenager who disappeared more than a decade ago, her sons have said.

    Luke Durbin, 19, went missing in the early hours of 12 May 2006.

    Mr Durbin, from Hollesley, had gone for a night out with friends in Ipswich and to date no trace of him has been found.

    Darroch and Makeyan Mckeague said their mother Nicola Urquhart has been in touch with Mr Durbin’s mother.

    Speaking on Facebook Live, external, they said there is not believed to be a link between the disappearances.

    Corrie Mckeague’s brothers have said they are still hopeful they will receive news of his whereabouts.

    Their 23-year-old brother, a gunner at RAF Honington, has been missing for almost four months.

    He was last seen in Bury St Edmunds, at about 03:25 on 24 September.

    Darroch and Makeyan Mckeague told followers of the Find Corrie, external Facebook page that it would be "amazing" if they could discover what has happened to their brother.

    Darroch said: "It would be the worst scenario to never get an answer."

    The brothers of missing airman Corrie Mckeague have said the last text message sent from his phone was to his girlfriend.

    Mr Mckeague, 23, disappeared after a night out in Bury St Edmunds on 24 September.

    His brothers Darroch and Makeyan answered questions on Facebook Live last night.

    They said their brother’s girlfriend, April Oliver, received a message from Mr Mckeague at 03:08. He was then not seen again after 03:25.

    The brothers said it had only now been brought to light that Mr Mckeague may not have sent the message at the same time Miss Oliver received it.

    Darroch said: "There is CCTV footage of Corrie at that time and he is not on his phone."

    It emerged on 9 January that Miss Oliver is pregnant with Mr Mckeague’s baby.

  14. Crash victims taken to James Paget Hospitalpublished at 15:34 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    Three people were taken to the James Paget Hospital following a two-vehicle collision which closed the A12 at Wangford earlier today.

    Their injuries are not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening.

    Police, who were called just before 10:30 to reports of a crash involving a black Nissan Qashqai and a blue Volvo XC70, are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

    The first in a programme of dance classes for people with dementia, launched by DanceEast, external in Ipswich, is taking place this afternoon.

    Lucy Bayliss, head of creative programming, says living with dementia can be very isolating.

    "The aim of the classes is to encourage people to come out, take part in a social occasion with the people who care for them and love them," she said.

    "In the time they're in that studio space, they're not a patient, they're not a carer or someone who's being cared for, they're all participants in a class."

  16. Judge clears woman accused of plotting to murder ex-partnerpublished at 15:09 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    A woman from Red Lodge who was accused of plotting to murder her ex-partner has been cleared, on the orders of a judge at Ipswich Crown Court.

    Judge David Goodin directed the jury to return a "not guilty" verdict against Rebecca Deferia, 30, after considering legal submissions from Ms Deferia's defence lawyers.

    James Sturman QC, appearing for Ms Deferia, told the court the case should be thrown out as the evidence against his client was "fundamentally weak".

    Ms Deferia had pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to murder Jonathan Catchpole, who was shot at his flat in Forum Court, Bury St Edmunds, in August.

    Recent Ipswich Town signing Jordan Spence experienced relegation with MK Dons last season, and has arrived in Suffolk at another club enduring a difficult spell.

    While the 26-year-old has not played a competitive match since May, he has been telling us today that he will be ready for action should he be selected at Huddersfield on Saturday. 

    "These are tough times but you have to respond," Spence said. "You are open to excitement and praise when things are going well, as well as criticism when things are bad.

    "The boys in there will be fine I'm sure and hopefully I'll be able to help out in some way."

    Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy's admitted that yesterday was humbling, humiliating and embarrassing for him and his players as they came to terms with Tuesday's loss to non league Lincoln.

    There was also some gallows humour from McCarthy, who was asked about whether potential new signings would be put off coming to Portman Road following the club's FA Cup exit. 

    "Well, as a player, I'd be thinking I could play in any position from one to eleven if I'd seen that on Tuesday night," McCarthy said. 

    "Players move to play in the team and not sit on the bench, so maybe somebody will have seen that and think they can come here and improve us."

    The 22-year-old missed Tuesday night's loss to Lincoln City in the FA Cup and manager Mick McCarthy confirmed afterwards the former Portsmouth man suffered an ankle injury in training. 

    Today McCarthy had this update for us: "He's ruptured ankle ligaments and needs an operation. It's sad that we're losing such a good player."
