    Fire crews were called to a church yesterday, after members of the congregation gathered for a cup of tea at the end of morning service and noticed smoke in the building.

    The Reverend Chris Hood, from the St Mary the Virgin church, external in Wetherden, near Stowmarket, said: "There was a dimming of the lights, a flash, a bang and then some smoke and then very quietly and calmly everybody left the church."

    He said once they were outside they were wondering where the smoke was coming from: "We were a little bit worried about whether it was in the tower itself and then slowly we began to see a little bit of smoke coming from where the main chancel of the building joins the tower."

    It's thought the fire may have been caused by electricity wires heating up as they passed through a birds' nest.

  2. Ed Sheeran 'not massively involved' in Castle On The Hill filmingpublished at 16:43 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    A student from Thomas Mills High School who plays a young Ed Sheeran in the video for the single Castle On The Hill says the singer-songwriter wasn't "massively involved" in the filming.

    Hugo Fairbanks-Weston said: "We didn't see him until the third day, and then I saw him on the fourth day as well. 

    "Luckily I saw him in Framlingham as well a few days later and we spoke about the video and all of that."

    Hugo, who filmed a scene in one of Ed's jumpers, says the idea that millions of people across the world are watching him in the video is "quite surreal".

    "It's more fun hearing friends I haven't spoken to for a while messaging me and bringing it up and saying well done," he said.

    One of the stars of Ed Sheeran's video for Castle On The Hill, external says taking part in the filming was a "really amazing experience".

    Hugo Fairbanks-Weston, a student at Thomas Mills High School (pictured centre with brothers Benjie left, and Alfie) plays the young Ed in the video filmed in Suffolk.

    He said: "Someone approached us at school asking for extras for a documentary supposedly - we all went along because we thought it would be fun.

    "When they saw us, we were asked to go to see them in the pub and then they told us what it was actually for and told us our roles and we went on from there.

    "I'm just really grateful that he came back to Fram and asked all of us to do it - he was just a really nice guy to meet."

    There’s some Ipswich Town transfer news coming out of Portman Road this afternoon, with the Blues confirming Leeds midfielder Toumani Diagouraga has joined on loan until the end of the season. 

    The 29-year-old has struggled for game time under Gary Monk at Elland Road this year. 

    If the paperwork goes through without any problems, the Frenchman could make his debut against Preston this weekend.

  6. Patient admits posting home-made bombs to GP surgerypublished at 16:09 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    A patient, with a history of self-harm, has admitted posting three home-made bombs through the letterbox of his doctor's surgery in west Norfolk,

    A trial at the Old Bailey heard that Ozzie Welsh, of Short Lane, Feltwell, had been in dispute with the surgery in Boughton before the incident in January last year.

    Welsh, 39, pleaded not guilty to doing an act with intent to cause an explosion but admitted having an explosive substance. The court heard he did not intend the explosion would endanger life or cause serious damage.

    A search of his home by police officers found a stash of potassium permanganate, aluminium powder, potassium nitrate and sulphur.

    At an earlier hearing, prosecutor John McNally said there were concerns about Welsh's mental state, and that the defendant had a history of self-harming "at the extreme end". 

    He also had a previous conviction for causing criminal damage.

    Judge Mark Lucraft QC ordered two reports, one psychiatric and the other from the probation service on the potential danger posed by Welsh ahead of sentencing on 13 March.

    The defendant was remanded in custody. 

  7. Overnight closures to begin on Bascule Bridgepublished at 15:55 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Routine maintenance work on the Bascule Bridge in Lowestoft means the A12 will be closed in both directions at the water crossing between 20:00 and 06:00, from tonight until Monday, 20 February.

    Highways England, external say a diversion will be clearly signposted, and a free hourly bus service will be provided for pedestrians wanting to cross the bridge.

    This will leave from the north side at quarter past the hour, and from the south side at quarter to the hour.

    Opportunities to help vulnerable victims of scam mail in the county are being missed, according to a BBC investigation into the work of trading standards.

    Less than 10% of the 1,500 names that have been passed to Suffolk Trading Standards in the past three years, have actually been visited.

    John Pearce from Lowestoft, who gets up to six scam letters a day, has lost £4,000 in four years.

    Trading Standards officer Lesley Crompton has been helping him: "In his heart of hearts, he still thinks he might be in with a chance of that £1m win but the message I need to get out there is 'don't fall for it in the first place'.

    "Don't put your name and address on these coupons that come through the post because once you do that, your names goes on that list."

    Ipswich Town, external boss Mick McCarthy's confirmed that former Newcastle centre-half Steven Taylor's spending time at the club, with a view to earning a short-term contract.

    The 30-year-old is a free agent after leaving US Major League Soccer side Portland Timbers last month.

    "He's come back from America and tells me he's fighting fit - well, we'll find out this week," said McCarthy.

    Ed Sheeran told the Graham Norton Show on BBC One that he hoped the song he's described as a "love song for Suffolk" -  Castle On The Hill - would take over as number one from Shape of You in the charts, after he performed it live.

    Appearing on the Graham Norton show on BBC 1 on Friday night, Framlingham singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran admitted to having an accident while on a trip to Iceland during his year away from social media.

    The 29-year-old has agreed a deal until the end of the season, and could make his debut at Preston on Saturday.

    "He's very mobile, he's a good footballer," said McCarthy.

    "He played in that Brentford team that got promoted where he was excellent, he started them going, he used to get on the ball. 

    "He's got a bit of drive about him and I think he can help us tighten that midfield up, but he's also got a really good forward pass, so it should be a good one for us."
