He said the irony was that on the night in question, they still managed to sell over 100 ice creams.

  20. Free range egg producer talks of 'Russian roulette' over bird flu restrictionspublished at 11:10 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2017

An egg producer has described the decision on whether to allow his free range chickens outside, or keep them under cover, "as like playing Russian roulette".

The cull of more than 20,000 birds on a Redgrave farm hit by avian flu will continue this morning. The outbreak is the first in the region.

Meanwhile, Alaistaire Brice, who runs Havensfield Happy Hens, says Defra has told him the decision on keeping his birds inside or out rests with him, as the producer.

Poultry keepers were first advised to keep their birds inside, in December.

Mr Brice said: "It's like Russian roulette, and what DEFRA are asking us to do is not what we are supposed to be doing...

"DEFRA are there to advise us and to police us, and to give us as much help as we need and really they've turned it totally round on the producers to try and make these difficult decisions."
